Lake Como is famous for its shoreline villas and impossible views, but the roads that link them are narrow, steep and packed in summer — exactly the kind of terrain a scooter was built for. Ride out from the Ponte Azzone Visconti, Lecco's medieval bridge over the Adda, and within twenty minutes you can be sipping a coffee on the Malgrate lakefront across the water, or climbing the hairpins toward the mountain plateau at Pian dei Resinelli with the Grigne peaks rising ahead of you.
Lecco sits at the point where the flat, traffic-choked lakeshore meets steep hillside roads to villages and passes that are slow going by car and simply too steep for a bicycle. A scooter handles both halves of that equation: it keeps pace along the lungolago, then climbs the switchbacks to places like the Ghisallo Pass without breaking a sweat, and it parks in a fraction of the space a car needs when Varenna or Bellagio fill up with day-trippers.
For a 50cc moped you need at least a category AM licence; anything from 51cc up to 125cc calls for category A1. If you only hold a car licence, some operators will let you ride a 125cc scooter under Italy's rules for B-licence holders, but this varies by rental company, so confirm it when you book. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit card hold, along with a copy of your ID or passport.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find a basic scooter from around 5 to 15 EUR per day, while high season pushes the same bike up to 20–40 EUR per day. Larger or newer models run 40–60 EUR per day even in peak months.
July and August are Lecco's busiest and priciest weeks, and also its hottest for climbing to Pian dei Resinelli or the Ghisallo Pass. May, June, September and early October offer the same views with cooler riding conditions, thinner crowds in Varenna and Bellagio, and easier access to bikes without booking far in advance. If you do want the classic high-season lake experience, reserve your **scooter rental in Lecco** a few weeks ahead, since the best models go first.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, moped or motorcycle, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and up to 130 km/h on motorways — though a 50cc moped is capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways or main dual carriageways anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence less than three years. Keep your headlight on at all times, even in daylight, as Italian law requires it for two-wheelers.
