Park the car outside La Spezia and let a scooter do the rest. The old town is small enough to cross on foot, but the coast is where this place opens up — a quick ride along the Golfo dei Poeti waterfront gets you oriented, and from there the road climbs and curls toward Portovenere, its pastel houses stacked below the cliffside Church of San Pietro. Keep going and the villages of the Cinque Terre — Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, Monterosso — sit just along the coastal road, each one a reason to stop.
This is a landscape built for two wheels. The lanes into Portovenere and up toward the Cinque Terre are narrow and switchback-heavy, the kind of roads where a car feels oversized and a bus runs twice a day if you're lucky. Trains connect the villages but skip the viewpoints entirely, and parking a car near any of them is expensive and scarce. A scooter costs little, slots into any spare curb, and lets you string together gulf towns and hillside lookouts in a single afternoon — which is exactly why so many visitors choose to rent a scooter in La Spezia rather than rely on trains and buses.
For scooters up to 50cc you need at minimum a category AM licence; anything from 50cc to 125cc requires category A1. Holders of a full car (B) licence can sometimes ride a 125cc locally, but acceptance of a foreign B licence varies by operator, so confirm before booking. Riders with a non-EU licence should carry an International Driving Permit alongside it. Rental shops typically set their own minimum age, usually 18, and hold a deposit — normally a credit card hold — scaled to the value of the scooter.
Average rental prices run around 15-20 EUR per day in low season and 30-40 EUR per day in high season, with premium models reaching 45-60 EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, when the coast roads and Cinque Terre villages are busiest and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads, thinner crowds and the cheapest rates of the year — though some seasonal outlets scale back hours. If you can, aim for May, June, September or early October: mild weather, easier availability, and rates well below the midsummer peak.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, with 50cc mopeds capped at 45 km/h and barred from dual carriageways. Dipped headlights stay on at all times. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for riders under 21 or holding a licence less than three years. Watch for ZTL restricted zones in the historic center — entering without a permit brings an automatic fine.
