Pisa is famous for one tower, but its real charm opens up once you leave the crowd at Piazza dei Miracoli behind and start moving. A scooter lets you slip through Borgo Stretto's arcades in the morning, then be sitting on the sand at Marina di Pisa by lunch, with the Arno running beside you most of the way. Rent a scooter in Pisa and the city stops being a single postcard stop and turns into a whole stretch of coast, pine forest and hill towns waiting to be explored.
The historic center is small and largely closed to cars around the Leaning Tower, so walking covers that part just fine. But the rides that make Pisa worth lingering over — down to the beaches at Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia, out into the pine woods of San Rossore, or up into the hills toward Vicopisano and Calci — sit 15 to 30 minutes away, distances a scooter eats up without the parking headaches a car brings. The terrain along the river and coast is flat and easy, so even a modest 50cc is comfortable for a full day out.
For a 50cc moped up to 45 km/h, an AM category licence is enough. Scooters between 50cc and 125cc call for an A1 licence, though holders of a full car licence may be allowed to ride a 125cc locally under certain conditions — check with the operator before you book, as acceptance of a foreign licence varies. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it. Most operators expect renters to be at least 18, and you'll need to leave a deposit, usually as a credit card hold, scaled to the vehicle's value.
Basic 50cc scooters run from EUR 5 to EUR 15 per day in low season, and from EUR 20 to EUR 45 per day in high season depending on the model and provider. Larger scooters or motorbikes can go from EUR 45 per day and up.
June to August is high season, driven by beach trips to Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia as well as tower-and-cathedral tourism, so book ahead if you're arriving then. November through February is low season, with the cheapest rates but fewer open outlets. If you want warm weather without the summer crush, May, June, September and early October tend to offer the best balance of price and availability.
Italy drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, moped or motorcycle, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on regular roads outside built-up areas, and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21 or who has held a licence less than three years. Keep your headlight on at all times while riding, and stay alert for ZTL restricted zones around the historic center — riding into one without a permit triggers an automatic fine.
