Picture arriving in Olbia, Italy with the Gulf sparkling beside the ferry terminal, and instead of waiting on a bus timetable, you simply pick up a scooter and go. Start with an easy loop past the Basilica di San Simplicio and along the Molo Brin promenade, then point north toward Pittulongu, where a short coastal ride puts you on the sand with the little Isola Bocca sitting just offshore. That first taste of freedom is exactly why so many travellers choose to rent a scooter in Olbia rather than rely on buses and taxis.
Olbia and the Costa Smeralda were practically made for two wheels. The coast roads are narrow, winding and often jammed with cars in July and August, but a scooter slips through, parks wherever you like, and turns a string of beaches, headlands and hill towns just 15 to 40 minutes apart into a single, easy day out. It also covers the airport-to-town and town-to-port hops that are awkward on foot and unnecessary by car.
For mopeds up to 50cc you need at least a category AM licence; for anything from 50cc up to 125cc you need category A1. If you only hold a full car (B) licence, some operators will let you ride a 125cc scooter under Italian rules, but this varies by company, so confirm before booking. Non-EU licence holders should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, scaled to the value of the scooter, and most rental shops set their own minimum age, typically 18.
Prices swing a lot with the season.
High season runs June through August, peaking hardest in July and August when the Costa Smeralda fills up and prices climb along with demand — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when many coastal outlets cut hours or close, but prices drop accordingly. May, June, September and early October hit the sweet spot: warm, quieter roads, and easier availability than midsummer.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and up to 110 km/h on the main extra-urban routes; 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use the faster roads. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21 or who has held a licence less than three years. Ready to get moving? Just use the search form at the top of the page to rent a scooter in Olbia. Have a nice trip!
