Southern Evia doesn't feel like the rest of Greece — Karystos sits below the bare granite spine of Mount Ochi, where the roads narrow, climb, and eventually give up on asphalt altogether. That's exactly where a quad earns its keep. You can follow the old quarry tracks up into the hills, cut through the Dimosari Gorge past small waterfalls and pools, or head out to the wind-battered lighthouse at Cape Kafireas, all without worrying about the surface changing under your wheels. If you want to rent a quad bike in Karystos, this is the terrain it was made for.
A car simply can't follow half these routes, and on foot the distances add up fast even though nothing here is really far — village, beach and mountain are usually only 10 to 25 km apart. A quad closes that gap comfortably: enough range for a full day's loop, small enough to handle a goat track, and easy enough on the short paved stretches between stops that first-time riders don't feel out of their depth. It's the one vehicle that makes the actual draw of this corner of Evia — the dragon-house trail, the gorge, the quarry roads — genuinely reachable.
You'll need a driving licence, though the exact category depends on how the quad is registered — a light quadricycle or a full quadricycle — so it's worth confirming with the rental company when you book. Rental shops typically set their own minimum age, often above the legal floor, and you should expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your licence.
A standard single or double-seat quad runs 15-25 EUR per day in low season, rising to 35-60 EUR per day in July and August. Bigger 4-seat buggies or off-road-spec ATVs cost more, typically 60-90 EUR per day.
July and August are high season — the best weather for the coast, but also the highest prices and the quads that go first. If you can, aim for May-June or September-October: quieter roads, milder heat for a day on the mountain tracks, and rates closer to the low-season end. Booking a few days ahead in summer is a good habit, since availability in a small town like Karystos can tighten fast.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and the police do check. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in town and 90 km/h on the open road, though on Karystos's mountain switchbacks you'll rarely want to go that fast. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies if you're a newer licence holder. One more thing worth knowing: rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and off-road use, so check with your operator which of the quarry tracks and mountain trails are actually covered before you set off. Once the practicalities are sorted, just use the search form at the top of the page to rent a quad bike in Karystos. Have a nice trip!
