Piombino doesn't announce itself the way Florence or Siena do — it's a working port town, and that's exactly what makes a scooter the right way to see it. Pick one up and within minutes you're at Piazza Giuseppe Bovio, the clifftop square where the Gulf of Baratti opens up in front of you with Elba sitting on the horizon. Wind down through the old town to the Rivellino, the fortified gate that's guarded Piombino's center since medieval times, and you've already covered more ground — and seen more — than most day-trippers manage on foot.
This coastline rewards two wheels. The real attractions aren't clustered downtown; they're strung along 10 to 30 kilometres of coast road and hill country, too far to walk and awkward on a bus timetable built around the Elba ferry. A scooter rental in Piombino lets you skip the ferry-queue traffic entirely and get straight onto the Baratti–Populonia road, one of the prettiest short rides in Tuscany, then keep going to a hill village or a pine forest whenever the mood takes you.
For a moped up to 50cc you need at least an AM licence, and a full car (B) licence covers this too. Anything from 50cc to 125cc calls for an A1 licence; rules on whether a foreign B licence is accepted for these larger scooters vary by operator, so it's worth checking before you book. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it. Most rental shops set their own minimum age, typically 18, and will ask for a deposit — usually a credit card hold sized to the value of the scooter — plus a copy of your passport or ID.
Average rental prices run from about 5 to 15 EUR per day in low season up to 25 to 45 EUR per day in high season, with larger-engine or newer scooters adding roughly 10 to 15 EUR per day on top.
High season runs June through August, when Piombino fills up with travellers heading for Elba and prices climb accordingly. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads and the lowest rates of the year, though some seasonal outlets scale back their hours. If you can, aim for the shoulder months around May, June, September or early October – you'll get warm weather, easy availability and better prices than the summer peak. Whatever the season, book ahead if you're arriving around the Elba ferry crossing, since demand spikes with it.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, moped or motorcycle, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and up to 110 km/h on the main extra-urban routes — a 50cc moped, though, is capped at 45 km/h and can't use the faster dual carriageways. Keep your dipped headlights on at all times, day or night. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence less than three years or are under 21.
