Lake Como looks like a postcard, but the real way to feel it is from the seat of a scooter, weaving along the Lungolago di Como past Piazza Cavour, or climbing the switchbacks to Brunate for a view that stretches over the whole lake. Rent a scooter here and the town opens up at your own pace — a quick ride to Cernobbio for lunch by Villa d'Este, or a longer loop toward Bellagio when the light turns golden in the late afternoon.
Como's old town is a maze of narrow lanes and one-way streets, and parking anywhere near the lakefront during the day is close to impossible. A scooter slips through both problems, and it's the only sensible way to handle the steep climb up to Brunate without wearing yourself out or crawling behind tour buses. The shoreline roads toward Cernobbio, Torno and Bellagio were practically made for two wheels — twisting, scenic, and far more fun than sitting in a queue of cars.
For a 50cc moped up to 45 km/h, an AM licence is enough. For anything from 50cc to 125cc you'll need an A1 licence, though holders of a full car licence can sometimes ride a 125cc locally — ask the rental operator directly, since acceptance of foreign licences varies. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit. Most operators set their own minimum age, usually 18, and take a deposit as a credit card hold or cash, scaled to the value of the scooter.
Expect around 20–30 EUR per day in low season and 35–55 EUR per day in high season, with premium or larger-displacement models running 50–80 EUR per day.
High season runs June to August, when the lake is busiest and prices sit at their highest — book a few weeks ahead if you're traveling then. Low season, November through March, is quieter and cheaper, though some smaller operators run reduced hours. If you can, aim for May, June or September: warm, dry, and easier on both your wallet and the crowds.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger, no exceptions, and your headlight should stay on at all times. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and 110 km/h on the main extra-urban routes; 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use the faster dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you're under 21 or have held your licence less than three years. Watch for ZTL zones in the historic center — ride into one without a permit and the fine will follow you home.
