Lampedusa rewards anyone willing to wander past the harbor, and a scooter is the easiest way to do it. Wake up in Porto Nuovo, coffee in hand, and twenty minutes later you can be parking above Spiaggia dei Conigli, walking down to water that looks tinted rather than simply blue. String together a swim at Cala Pulcino and a sunset stop at Punta Sottile in the same afternoon, something no bus timetable on this island will ever let you do.

This is a small island — about 20 square kilometres of hills, coves and unpaved tracks — and that's exactly why a scooter fits it so well. Nothing sits more than 20–30 minutes from town, so you never miss the extra power of a car, while a scooter still slips down the narrow lanes and gravel approaches that lead to the best beaches. Parking in the tight harbor streets stops being a problem, and a single loop road lets you chain several coves together instead of backtracking for each one.

Top 10 things to see in Lampedusa by scooter

  1. Spiaggia dei Conigli (Rabbit Beach) — repeatedly ranked among the world's best beaches, reached by a short walk down from a small scooter parking area.
  2. Isola dei Conigli (Rabbit Island) — a tiny islet just offshore, wadeable at low tide and a protected nesting site for loggerhead turtles.
  3. Cala Pulcino — a secluded cove on the wilder south coast, a favourite scooter ride for swimming away from the crowds.
  4. Cala Croce — a scenic bay with clear water, an easy short ride from town for an afternoon swim.
  5. Cala Creta — a rocky cove good for snorkeling, part of a coastal loop worth riding at sunset.
  6. Vallone dell'Acqua — a dramatic cliffside valley and beach on the north coast, one of the island's classic viewpoints.
  7. Punta Sottile — the westernmost tip of the island, with a lighthouse and open-sea views that make it a natural sunset ride.
  8. Faro di Capo Grecale — a lighthouse on the eastern cliffs with sweeping views back over the island.
  9. Porto Nuovo — Lampedusa's harbor and town centre, the natural base for starting and ending your rides, with waterfront cafés along the way.
  10. Santuario Madonna di Porto Salvo — the island's main church and pilgrimage site, a short climb up from the harbor with views over town.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Lampedusa?

For a 50cc moped, an AM category licence covers it. Anything above 50cc up to 125cc needs an A1 licence, and full car (B) licence holders can sometimes ride a 125cc scooter too — check with the operator before booking, since acceptance of foreign licences varies. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it. Rental companies generally set a minimum age of 18, and you should expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit card hold, sized to the value of the scooter.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Lampedusa?

Prices swing a lot with the season. Low-season listings start from around 5 EUR per day at the cheapest end, with typical low-season rates closer to 15 EUR. In high summer, expect roughly 25 to 40 EUR per day, and a bigger or newer 125–150cc model can reach 30 to 45 EUR per day.

  • Cheapest: April, May and October, in the shoulder season.
  • Priciest: July and August, peaking around Ferragosto on August 15.
  • The island is largely closed to tourism from November through March, so rentals thin out too.

When to book a rental scooter in Lampedusa?

If you can plan around the crowds, April, May and October give you warm days, quieter beaches and the lowest prices. July and August are Lampedusa at its busiest and hottest, so if you're set on a midsummer trip, book your scooter well ahead — availability on a small island like this tightens fast once the high season starts.

Local traffic rules in Lampedusa

Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no exceptions by age. Inside built-up areas the speed limit is 50 km/h, dropping further on narrow local roads, and a 50cc moped is capped at 45 km/h regardless. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and it drops to zero if you're under 21 or have held your licence for less than three years.

Book your ride through our scooter rental in Lampedusa search form at the top of the page, and let the island's coves do the rest. Have a nice trip!
