El Hierro doesn't feel like a place you drive through — it feels like a place you thread yourself into, one hairpin at a time. Rent a scooter here and you can dip down into the amphitheatre of El Golfo, stop wherever the light looks good at the Mirador de la Peña, and keep going west until the road runs out at the Faro de Orchilla, the old zero meridian lighthouse marking the edge of the map. Nobody sees this island properly from a bus window.

This is about as scooter-friendly as an island gets. The roads are narrow, twisty and almost empty outside a few village lanes, so nothing is fighting you for space. Distances between villages are short, parking is never an issue, and a scooter lets you pull over the moment a viewpoint or a black-sand cove catches your eye — something a rental car, and definitely a tour bus, won't let you do.

Top 10 things to see in El Hierro by scooter

  1. Mirador de la Peña — a César Manrique-designed lookout over the El Golfo valley, an easy first ride out of Valverde.
  2. Faro de Orchilla — the historic Meridian Zero lighthouse at the island's westernmost point, reached through the pine woods of La Dehesa.
  3. El Sabinar — wind-bent juniper trees twisted almost flat, a roadside stop you can't ride past without pulling over.
  4. La Restinga — the southernmost village, a laid-back fishing and diving harbour with dive sites just off the coast.
  5. Charco Azul — a natural volcanic pool near Pozo de las Calcosas, one of the island's favourite swim stops.
  6. Charco Manso — another north-coast rock pool, quieter and less crowded than Charco Azul.
  7. Pozo de la Salud — a mineral-water spa tucked into the wild west coast near Sabinosa.
  8. Ermita de los Reyes — a remote hillside hermitage in the Sabinosa hills, worth the winding climb.
  9. Tacorón — a rocky cove with a natural pool, great for snorkelling near La Restinga.
  10. Mirador de Jinama — a cliff-edge viewpoint over El Golfo, at the top of a mountain road full of switchbacks.

What do you need to rent a scooter in El Hierro?

For anything up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you (minimum age 15 in Spain), and a standard car licence works too. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence — the "3 years on a car licence" rule that some Spaniards use only counts inside Spain, so most visitors from outside the EU will need an actual motorcycle licence instead. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it, since rental desks generally ask for one. Expect rental companies to also set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, plus a security deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in El Hierro?

Prices swing with the season: around EUR 5-15 per day in low season, and EUR 20-35 per day in high season, with premium models running EUR 25-40 per day.

  • Cheapest: November to February, outside the Christmas and New Year rush.
  • Priciest: July and August, plus Easter week.

When to book a rental scooter in El Hierro?

Book ahead if you're travelling in July or August or over Semana Santa, when demand — and prices — climb across the island. If your dates are flexible, November through February brings the best rates, minus the holiday weeks in between. Outside those peaks, El Hierro stays quiet enough that you can usually book closer to your travel dates without trouble.

Local traffic rules in El Hierro

Spain drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers at all times, on every road. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas, though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h regardless. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lower still at 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years. Scooters and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights on day and night, and using a handheld phone while riding is against the law.
