Alexandroupoli doesn't announce itself the way Santorini or Rhodes do, and that's exactly the appeal. Rent a quad in this quiet corner of Thrace and within twenty minutes you can trade the seafront promenade by the Alexandroupoli Lighthouse for the wetland tracks of the Evros Delta National Park, where storks and pelicans outnumber tourists by a wide margin. Push further and the coastline gives way to the raptor-thick hills of Dadia forest — a landscape most visitors to Greece never see.
The city itself is small and easy, with light traffic that makes a first ride stress-free. But its real value is what surrounds it: flat delta tracks, narrow village lanes, coastal dirt paths and forested hill roads, all within 20–40 km. A scooter struggles once the tarmac ends, and a car feels clumsy on the tighter lanes near Avantas or Makri. A quad bike rental in Alexandroupoli handles all of it comfortably, which is why it suits this particular stretch of Greece better than either alternative.
Greek law requires a driving licence for quad bikes, though the exact category depends on how the vehicle is registered — light quadricycle or quadricycle — so it's worth confirming with the rental company when you book. If you're arriving from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence. Rental shops typically ask for a minimum age of 18 and will hold a deposit, usually as a credit-card authorisation, for the duration of the rental.
Expect to pay around 15-20 EUR per day in low season, rising to 30-40 EUR per day in high season. Premium models run 45-60 EUR per day.
July and August are high season here, with the warmest weather, the highest prices and the tightest availability — book ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season, with shops offering their best rates, though some smaller operators scale back hours over winter. May, June, September and October sit comfortably in between: mild weather, easier availability, and prices that don't demand a peak-season premium.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open roads you'll likely use around the delta and hills. The general blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, but it drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and quad riders, so it's simplest to treat any riding day as an alcohol-free one. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers unpaved roads or off-road use — check with your operator before leaving the tarmac around Avantas or the delta tracks.
