Nea Makri wakes up slowly along its seafront, and there is no better way to catch that rhythm than from a saddle. Pedal down to Nea Makri Beach at Zoumberi for an early swim, then wander inland past the Agios Panteleimonas Church before the day gets hot. Further along the coast, the flat road toward the Marathon Tomb rewards you with one of the quieter, more atmospheric corners of Attica — a burial mound holding the Athenian dead from 490 BC, reached at your own pace rather than through a bus window.
This is a compact, mostly flat coastal town, and that is exactly what makes cycling the natural choice here. Distances between the seafront, the center and the Marathon-area sites are short enough that a car feels like overkill, and parking in high season is more hassle than it is worth. The coastal roads north toward Marathon and Schinias, and south toward Rafina, are gentle enough for a relaxed ride rather than a workout, which is why so many visitors choose to rent a bicycle in Nea Makri instead of driving.
Good news for cyclists: no licence, minimum age or IDP is required to hire a bicycle in Greece. Most shops will ask for a small deposit, usually held on a credit card, and some may ask to see an ID. It is about the simplest rental you will make on your trip.
Basic city and beach cruiser bikes run from around 3 EUR to 5 EUR per day off-peak, rising to 7 EUR to 10 EUR per day in the busiest summer weeks. If you want an electric or hybrid/mountain bike, expect roughly 12 EUR to 20 EUR per day.
July and August are high season, with the warmest weather, the busiest beaches and the highest prices, so it is worth booking a few days ahead if you are traveling then. November through March is low season, with the lowest prices but a much quieter town and fewer riders around. If you can, aim for spring or early autumn, when temperatures are kinder for a longer ride out to Marathon Lake or Schinias.
Greece drives on the right, and cyclists share the road with local traffic, so ride predictably and keep to the right where possible. There is no legal requirement for cyclists to wear a helmet, but it is a sensible habit, especially on the coastal road toward Rafina where cars move faster. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h speed limit for motor vehicles and open roads up to 90 km/h, so stay alert at junctions and roundabouts. If you plan to have a drink along the way, remember that Greece takes road safety seriously — better to save the wine for after you have parked the bike for the day.
