Picture the road unspooling above the Aegean as it climbs out of Mytilene town toward Molyvos, olive groves giving way to a hilltop castle and a harbor stacked with cafés. Lesbos rewards exactly this kind of wandering: a coastline that swings from the petrified trunks near Sigri to the ouzo-scented lanes of Plomari, with plenty of quiet coves in between that no bus route bothers to reach. Renting your own set of wheels turns those postcard stops into a single, unhurried loop.

This island is the third largest in Greece, and its best places sit 40 to 60 kilometres apart, over hills and around bays that public transport barely touches outside the capital. A scooter or moped closes that gap. It is light enough for the narrow village roads around Agiasos, nimble enough for the switchbacks up to Ipsilou Monastery, and cheap enough on fuel to make detours guilt-free. You will not need a car here — you need something that lets you stop whenever a view or a beach catches your eye.

Top 10 things to see in Mytilene by scooter

  1. Molyvos (Mithymna) — a Genoese castle above a cobbled harbor town, and the island's classic ride destination.
  2. Petrified Forest of Lesvos (Sigri) — a UNESCO Geopark of fossilized trees along an open, almost lunar west-coast road.
  3. Eftalou hot springs — seaside thermal baths just east of Molyvos, an easy loop to tack onto a castle-town day.
  4. Skala Eresou — a long sandy beach town on the southwest coast, birthplace of Sappho and a favourite for sunset rides.
  5. Ipsilou Monastery — perched on an extinct volcanic cone near Sigri, with views across the petrified forest.
  6. Agiasos — a traditional mountain village on the slopes of Mount Olympos, cobbled streets and a pilgrimage church.
  7. Mytilene Castle — a sprawling Byzantine-Genoese-Ottoman fortress over the capital's harbor, minutes from town.
  8. Vatera beach — one of the island's longest stretches of sand, on a relaxed southern coastal road.
  9. Plomari — a seaside town known for its ouzo distilleries and a picturesque harbor.
  10. Panagia Kryfti — natural hot spring baths carved into the rocks right at the sea near Vatera.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Mytilene?

For a 50cc moped you need at least a category AM licence and to be 16 or older; for anything 125cc and up, a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) is required — a car licence alone is not accepted in Greece. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit. Rental companies will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the operator rather than a fixed rule.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Mytilene?

Expect to pay around EUR 15-25 per day for a standard 50cc scooter in high season, dropping to roughly EUR 3-8 per day off-season, though winter rentals are often only available for multiple days at a time. Higher-cc scooters or automatics can run EUR 25-35 per day at peak times.

  • July and August are the priciest months, with demand at its highest.
  • November through March is low season, with the cheapest rates.
  • April and October sit in between as more affordable shoulder months.

When to book a rental scooter in Mytilene?

If you're coming in July or August, book ahead — prices peak and scooters sell out fast island-wide. May, June, September and October offer milder weather, thinner crowds and noticeably better rates, making them the sweet spot for riding. Outside of that, from November to March many rental shops close for the season entirely, so options narrow considerably.

Local traffic rules in Mytilene

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict, with steep fines for going without one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though island routes are often narrow, steep and gravel-strewn, so treat those as ceilings, not targets. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to ride sober. Keep to paved roads, too — rental insurance almost always excludes beaches, dirt tracks and unpaved surfaces.

Which insurance is provided with my rental bicycle?

Some include simple loss or damage protection in the price, while others cover it through your deposit; always check the exact terms on the booking page before you confirm.
