Picture the road unspooling above the Aegean as it climbs out of Mytilene town toward Molyvos, olive groves giving way to a hilltop castle and a harbor stacked with cafés. Lesbos rewards exactly this kind of wandering: a coastline that swings from the petrified trunks near Sigri to the ouzo-scented lanes of Plomari, with plenty of quiet coves in between that no bus route bothers to reach. Renting your own set of wheels turns those postcard stops into a single, unhurried loop.
This island is the third largest in Greece, and its best places sit 40 to 60 kilometres apart, over hills and around bays that public transport barely touches outside the capital. A scooter or moped closes that gap. It is light enough for the narrow village roads around Agiasos, nimble enough for the switchbacks up to Ipsilou Monastery, and cheap enough on fuel to make detours guilt-free. You will not need a car here — you need something that lets you stop whenever a view or a beach catches your eye.
For a 50cc moped you need at least a category AM licence and to be 16 or older; for anything 125cc and up, a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) is required — a car licence alone is not accepted in Greece. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit. Rental companies will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the operator rather than a fixed rule.
Expect to pay around EUR 15-25 per day for a standard 50cc scooter in high season, dropping to roughly EUR 3-8 per day off-season, though winter rentals are often only available for multiple days at a time. Higher-cc scooters or automatics can run EUR 25-35 per day at peak times.
If you're coming in July or August, book ahead — prices peak and scooters sell out fast island-wide. May, June, September and October offer milder weather, thinner crowds and noticeably better rates, making them the sweet spot for riding. Outside of that, from November to March many rental shops close for the season entirely, so options narrow considerably.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict, with steep fines for going without one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though island routes are often narrow, steep and gravel-strewn, so treat those as ceilings, not targets. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to ride sober. Keep to paved roads, too — rental insurance almost always excludes beaches, dirt tracks and unpaved surfaces.
