Picture starting the day on two wheels along the old railway line that hugs Serra Gelada, salt air on your face, the lighthouse at Faro del Albir waiting at the end of a flat, car-free path. Then, an hour later, grinding up the Bernia ridge through orange groves with the whole Costa Blanca spread out below you. Few destinations let you swing between an easy seafront cruise and a serious training climb without ever loading the bike into a car — Albir does, and it's one of the best reasons to rent a bike in Albir for your stay.
Albir itself is small and largely flat, so a bicycle is genuinely the easiest way to get around: the seafront promenade, the pebble beach, and the coastal path to the lighthouse are all within easy pedalling distance, and traffic in the old centre is light enough to ride without stress. For anyone wanting more of a challenge, the hills inland — Bernia, Guadalest — are some of the most respected road-cycling climbs in Europe, and you can reach them straight from town. Few places pack both an easy sightseeing loop and a serious hill-riding workout into one base like this.
No licence is required to hire a bicycle in Spain, whatever your age. Most rental shops set their own minimum age, and you'll usually be asked to leave a deposit, typically blocked on a credit card in your name, though the exact amount depends on the shop and the bike. Since there's no licence involved, there's no need for an International Driving Permit either — just bring ID.
A basic city or hybrid bike runs roughly EUR 3–8 per day in low season and EUR 10–15 per day in high season. If you want a proper road bike or an e-bike from a specialist shop such as Bikes Costa Blanca or CCT Bike Rental, expect around EUR 20–35 per day.
If you're after a serious climb up Bernia or Guadalest, book ahead for February–May or September–October — this is when road cyclists descend on the region and the best bikes go fast. For a relaxed seafront ride, November–January and June–August bring lower demand and lower prices, and you can usually book closer to your travel dates.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists must wear a helmet on interurban roads regardless of age; within town it's compulsory only for riders under 16. Speed limits for vehicles around you range from 50 km/h in built-up areas down to 30 km/h or 20 km/h on shared urban streets, so traffic moves slowly through Albir itself. Drivers overtaking you must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance, and you're allowed to ride two abreast. If you're combining cycling with a rental car or scooter, note the blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lower for newer drivers.
