Albal sits flat and quiet on Valencia's southern plain, and a bike is what turns that quiet into an advantage. From the town it's a short, level pedal down to the Parque Natural de la Albufera, where the cycle track skims the edge of the lagoon past rice fields and fishing huts. Push on and you reach El Palmar, where you can lean the bike against a wall, order paella where the dish was born, and take a paseo en barca out onto the water before riding back.
What makes Albal work so well for cycling is the geography itself: no hills, no real distances to speak of, and a direct line into two very different worlds. One direction takes you into the traffic-free pine forests and dune paths of the Devesa, the other links up with Valencia's Turia Gardens corridor, so a single bike lets you cover marshland, forest, beach and city without once needing a car, a bus timetable or a parking space.
No licence, of course — cycling in Spain is open to any age, and there's no minimum age or deposit set by law. Rental companies usually still ask for an ID and sometimes hold a small deposit on a card, but the paperwork stops there. No IDP, no test, just show up and ride.
Prices swing a fair bit with the season. In low season you're typically looking at EUR 3–5 per day; in high season that rises to around EUR 8–15 per day. E-bikes, if you'd rather let the flat terrain do less of the work, run EUR 15–25 per day.
June through September is high season here, driven by beach weather and holidaymakers heading for the Albufera, so it's worth booking a few days ahead if you're travelling then. November to February is low season, with the lowest prices and the lagoon at its most peaceful. If you want the best of both — mild weather, thinner crowds, easy booking — aim for May, or September and October.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet within built-up areas; outside town limits, on interurban roads, a helmet is compulsory at any age, and it's a sensible habit to keep on regardless. Speed limits around Albal top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, so bikes generally keep pace comfortably with local traffic. If you're riding after dark outside town, Spanish law asks for lights plus a reflective garment, and drivers overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 m of space. The blood alcohol limit for driving is 0.5 g/l, and it's worth keeping the same rule of thumb in mind on two wheels.
