Picture swapping the bus timetable for open road: you pull away from the seafront near Playa del Cura, coffee still in hand, and twenty minutes later you're standing over the impossibly pink water of the Laguna Rosa. That's the kind of morning a motorcycle buys you in Torrevieja. Ride the coast road south and the beaches keep coming — quiet coves, wide sandy stretches, harbour views — each one a five-minute detour rather than an afternoon commitment.
Torrevieja's centre is small enough to walk, but its best parts aren't in the centre at all — they're strung along the coast in both directions, and in summer the streets fill with parked cars fighting for the same few spaces. A scooter or motorcycle skips that entirely: flat roads, wide coastal avenues and short hops between towns make two wheels the obvious way to link Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Guardamar in a single easy day, which is exactly why so many visitors choose to rent a motorcycle in Torrevieja instead of relying on buses or taxis.
For a moped up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you, and a standard car licence works too. For a 125cc scooter you'll generally need an A1 motorcycle licence — the car-licence route to 125cc only applies to Spanish/EU licences held at least three years, so most visiting travellers need the motorcycle licence instead. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since rental desks routinely ask for it. Most operators set their own minimum age, commonly 18 or 21 depending on the vehicle, and you should expect a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
Expect around EUR 20–28 per day in low season — our own listings start at EUR 25/day — rising to roughly EUR 35–55 per day in high season. Bigger-displacement or newer motorcycles run EUR 45–70 per day compared with standard scooters.
High season runs July and August, when demand and prices both peak, so book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest prices and the least competition for bikes. If you'd rather split the difference, May–June and September–October bring reliably good riding weather without the summer premium.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, and headlights must stay on, day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas (dropping to 30 or 20 km/h on narrower urban streets), 90 km/h on conventional roads and 120 km/h on motorways — though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways at all. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lowered to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
