Trapani rewards anyone willing to explore beyond the harbour. Ride out along the coastal road and the Saline di Trapani e Paceco unfold in front of you — centuries-old windmills standing over pink-tinged salt pans, one of the most photographed stretches of western Sicily. Head the other direction and a winding mountain road climbs toward Erice, its medieval streets perched above the clouds with the whole Tyrrhenian coast spread out below. A scooter puts both within easy reach in the same afternoon, something no bus timetable will ever manage.
The old town's narrow lanes and scarce, pricey parking make a car more trouble than it's worth here, while Trapani's real highlights sit just outside the centre. Erice, San Vito Lo Capo and Segesta are all 20 to 50 minutes away on roads that swing between flat coastal stretches and hill switchbacks — exactly the kind of terrain that's genuinely fun on two wheels. If you want to rent a scooter in Trapani, this is where it pays off most.
For a 50cc moped you'll need at least a category AM licence; anything from 50cc up to 125cc calls for category A1. If you're travelling with a non-EU driving licence, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Most operators set their own minimum age, usually 18, and will ask for a deposit — either a credit card hold or cash — scaled to the value of the scooter.
Expect to pay around 5–15 EUR per day in low season and 20–35 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 35–50 EUR per day.
July and August are Trapani's busiest and priciest months, so book several weeks ahead if you're travelling then. From November to March many seasonal outlets scale back or close, which keeps prices low but narrows your choice of vehicles. May, June, September and early October hit the sweet spot — warm, quiet roads and easier availability, all at a fraction of high-season prices.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, moped or motorcycle, with no exceptions by age. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and 110 km/h on main extra-urban dual carriageways; 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use the faster roads. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for riders under 21 or holding a licence less than three years — worth keeping in mind if you're planning a relaxed lunch in Erice before riding back down.
