Brescia doesn't announce itself the way Rome or Florence does, and that's exactly what makes it worth exploring on two wheels. Weave out from Piazza della Loggia in the early morning, climb toward the Castello di Brescia for a view over the terracotta rooftops, and you'll understand why locals call it the Falcon of Italy. String together a ride to Lago di Garda or the vineyard lanes of Franciacorta and by afternoon you're somewhere that feels nothing like a city trip.
The old town's streets are narrow, mostly closed to cars, and short on parking, so a scooter gets you from the Roman ruins to the castle hill in minutes rather than the half hour a bus or a long walk would take. It also puts the lakes and hills within easy reach: Garda, Iseo and the Franciacorta countryside are all 30 to 60 minutes away, no train timetable required. If you want to rent a scooter in Brescia, this is a city built for exactly that kind of freedom.
For a 50cc moped you need at least a category AM licence, available in Italy from age 14, though most rental shops set their own minimum age for tourists. Anything from 51cc up to 125cc calls for a category A1 licence. Holders of a full car (B) licence can sometimes ride a 125cc scooter under Italian rules, but not every rental company accepts a foreign B licence for this, so check before you book. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the scooter, plus a copy of your ID or passport.
A basic 50cc scooter runs EUR 5–15 per day in low season, climbing to EUR 20–40 per day in high season. Larger 125cc–300cc or premium touring models cost EUR 40–70 or more per day, especially near Lago di Garda in peak summer.
If you're chasing the best rates, aim for the low season between November and February, when a basic scooter can cost as little as EUR 5 a day. High season runs June to August, when demand around the lakes spikes and prices follow — book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then, especially for anything near Garda. Spring and early autumn strike a nice balance: pleasant riding weather without the midsummer premium.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, moped or motorcycle, with no exceptions for age. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on country roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways or main dual carriageways. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21 or who has held a licence for less than three years. Watch for ZTL restricted zones in the historic centre — ride into one without a permit and the fine turns up by post months later. Most of our scooter rentals in Brescia come from operators with years of experience, handing over a well-kept vehicle, helmet and friendly advice on where to ride. Have a nice trip!
