Volos sits where the Pelion mountains slide straight down into the Pagasetic Gulf, and that geography is exactly what makes it such a rewarding place to explore on two wheels. Ride the waterfront past fishing boats and cafés, then turn inland and within minutes you're climbing toward stone villages like Makrinitsa, with cobbled plateias and views back over the gulf, or Portaria, where plane trees shade the square and tavernas wait for a well-earned coffee break. This is a city where a single day's ride can take you from sea level to mountain air.
Volos itself is flat, compact and easy going — the seafront promenade, the old town and the archaeological museum are all within a short, effortless pedal of each other, which makes a bicycle the obvious choice for getting your bearings. What sets it apart, though, is Mount Pelion rising right behind the city. Village lanes and coastal roads that would take a car in circles are short enough for a fit rider, or comfortably reachable on an e-bike, in an afternoon. If you want to rent a bicycle in Volos, you get access to a landscape that public transport and driving simply don't open up in the same way.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle in Greece, and there's no minimum age set by law, though rental shops may ask for ID and a small deposit to cover the bike. An IDP isn't relevant here — that's only a concern if you're planning to hire a scooter or car as well. Bring a form of ID and, if you're after an e-bike, be ready to leave a slightly higher deposit given the equipment's value.
Expect to pay around 3-6 EUR per day for a basic city or mountain bike during low season, rising to 8-15 EUR per day in high season. E-bikes and premium mountain bikes typically run 15-25 EUR per day.
High season runs July-August, when prices peak and the midday heat can make climbing to Makrinitsa or Portaria hard work. Low season, November-March, brings the cheapest rates but cooler, sometimes wet conditions for mountain routes. May-June and September-October hit the sweet spot: pleasant temperatures, quieter roads and reasonable prices, so booking a few days ahead in those months is a good idea.
Greece drives on the right. Cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet, but it's a sensible precaution on the steeper Pelion descents, where roads can be narrow and surfaces uneven. If you're mixing in any motorised transport, remember that Greece enforces helmet use strictly for scooters and motorcycles, with speed limits of 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, and a blood-alcohol limit of 0.5 g/l for most drivers. On a bicycle, the main things to watch are loose gravel on mountain bends and light traffic on the way up to the villages — ride defensively and enjoy the descent.
