Santorini rewards anyone willing to leave the tour buses behind. Slip through Fira on two wheels and you can be perched above the caldera in Imerovigli within minutes, or winding down to the black sand of Kamari before the beach crowds arrive. A bike gets you to the places postcards are made of — and plenty that never make the postcards at all.
This island wasn't built for cars. The roads between villages are narrow, cliffside, and often choked with rental ATVs and coach traffic in high season, so parking near Oia or Fira's caldera edge can eat up half your afternoon. A scooter or bicycle slips past the queue, tucks into a gap no car could use, and gets you from one whitewashed village to the next in the time it takes a bus to find a turnout. At just 18km end to end, Santorini is small enough that a single day's ride can string together clifftop views, ancient ruins and a swim, with room to detour to quieter spots like Pyrgos that most visitors skip entirely.
For a bicycle, nothing more than a sense of adventure — no licence required. For a scooter up to 50cc you'll need at least an AM category licence and to be 16 or over; anything 125cc and above calls for a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) and you must be 18. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Most rental shops will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by vehicle and operator.
Expect to pay around 15–20 EUR per day for a basic scooter in low season, rising to 25–40 EUR in high season. Larger-engine scooters, quads and buggies run higher, typically 35–60 EUR a day at peak times.
High season runs July and August, when scooters and quads sell out fast and prices sit at their highest — book well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest rates but the fewest shops open. For the best balance of good weather, open roads and fair prices, May, June, September and October are hard to beat.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on every type of powered two-wheeler, and police do check. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in villages and 90 km/h on the open road, though Santorini's tight bends rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists and new drivers, so it's simplest to keep riding and drinking well apart. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and remember that straying onto dirt tracks or beaches typically voids your insurance outright.
