Nerja rewards anyone willing to move beyond its old town, and a bicycle is the easiest way to do it. Pedal out from the Balcón de Europa along the coast and within minutes you are looking down over Playa de Maro, its cove tucked beneath cliffs that most day-trippers on foot never reach. Push a little further and the road climbs toward Frigiliana, a whitewashed village that looks like it was built for a postcard, or east to the Cuevas de Nerja, one of Andalucía's genuine prehistoric landmarks and a proper destination for a half-day ride.
The old town itself is narrow, stepped and built for walking, which is exactly why a bike matters here. Nerja's real highlights are strung out along the coast and up into the hills above it, a few kilometres apart, connected by roads with real gradient and real views. Buses run infrequently and walking eats the whole day; on two wheels you can string together a beach, a cave and a clifftop village before lunch, and stop wherever the light looks good.
None of this requires a licence — bicycles in Spain can be hired and ridden at any age, no permit and no International Driving Permit needed. Most shops will ask for ID and a card for a deposit, with the amount depending on the bike; expect it to run higher for e-bikes and premium road or mountain models than for a basic city bike.
Prices move a lot with the season. In low season a standard bike runs roughly 3–8 EUR per day, and in high season that climbs to about 12–20 EUR per day. E-bikes and premium road or mountain bikes typically cost more, around 15–30 EUR per day.
High season on Spain's mainland runs through July and August, plus Easter week, when prices sit at their highest and popular bikes can sell out — book a few days ahead if you are travelling then. Low season runs November through March, with the best riding weather generally falling in May, June, September and October: mild temperatures, lighter crowds, and lower prices than midsummer.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists must wear a helmet on interurban roads at any age, though within the town itself it is only compulsory for riders under 16. Speed limits drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas and as low as 20–30 km/h on narrow single-lane urban streets, so traffic moves slowly around the old town. The blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, and vehicles overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 metres of clearance. If riding outside town after dark, lights and a reflective garment are required.
