Kalamaria wakes up on two wheels. Locals roll out along the Nea Krini waterfront promenade before the day heats up, coffee in one hand, handlebars in the other, and by the time you reach Aretsou Marina the yachts are still half-asleep in the morning light. This is a suburb built for a bicycle: flat, breezy, and stitched to the sea for its entire length, so a short ride can turn into an afternoon without you noticing the kilometres pass.
What makes Kalamaria so good for cycling is the coastline itself. A continuous, well-marked bike path runs along the water from here all the way into central Thessaloniki, so you never have to fight traffic or dodge buses to get where you're going. Renting a bike in Kalamaria means you can hop between quiet coastal points like Karabournaki in the morning and be parked outside the White Tower by lunch, all without the hassle of parking a car or waiting on a bus schedule.
Good news — a bicycle needs no licence at all in Greece, so anyone can get moving straight away. There's no minimum age requirement either, though rental shops may ask for a small deposit, usually held on a credit card, to cover the bike itself. No IDP, no paperwork headaches: just show up and ride.
Prices swing with the season. In low season you can find a bike for as little as 3-5 EUR per day, while in high season expect to pay 8-15 EUR per day for a standard bike, or 15-25 EUR per day for a premium model.
High season runs July through August, when demand is highest and prices peak along with the summer heat. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest daily rates but cooler, quieter riding. If you want the sweet spot — comfortable temperatures, thinner crowds and reasonable prices — May-June and September-October are hard to beat, so it's worth booking a little ahead if you're planning a trip in those windows.
Greece drives on the right, and while helmets aren't a legal requirement for casual cyclists, it's always sensible to wear one on shared roads. Keep to a reasonable pace on the seafront path, where pedestrians, joggers and other cyclists share the same lane, and remember that speed limits for vehicles in built-up areas like Kalamaria are capped at 50 km/h. If you're enjoying a coffee before or after your ride, keep in mind Greece's blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most road users — a good reason to save the wine for once you're off the saddle.
