East of Athens, where the city's grid finally loosens into the Mesogeia plain, Gerakas offers something you won't get downtown: room to breathe. Pick up a bike here and the foothills of Mount Hymettus are within easy reach, their forest tracks opening onto views back over the whole Athens basin. Head the other way and you're rolling toward Pallini's central square for a coffee, or further out to the museum grounds of Peania. This is exploring at your own pace, away from taxi queues and metro crowds.
Gerakas itself is flat to gently rolling, with wide suburban roads connecting it to Pallini, Peania and Spata — towns that sit awkwardly far apart by car but line up naturally on two wheels. A bike rental in Gerakas turns those short, fiddly hops into a pleasant half-day loop, and opens up quiet countryside toward Hymettus that public transport simply doesn't reach.
None of this needs a licence — ordinary bicycles don't require one in Greece. There's no minimum age restriction to speak of and no IDP to carry. Most operators will still ask for a small deposit, usually a card hold, before handing over the bike. Bring a form of ID and you're set to go.
Expect around 3-5 EUR per day for a basic city bike in low season, rising to 6-10 EUR per day in high season. If you'd rather cover more ground, an e-bike or mountain bike runs 12-20 EUR per day.
High season runs July-August, when prices peak and the midday heat can make longer rides tough going. Low season stretches from November to March, with the best value and the quietest roads. For the sweet spot — comfortable temperatures and easy availability — aim for May-June or September-October.
Greece drives on the right, so keep that in mind on shared roads and at junctions. Helmets aren't a strict legal requirement for cyclists, but wearing one is good sense on faster suburban roads. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, and if you're mixing cycling with a drink, remember Greece's general blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l. Ride defensively around Gerakas's busier junctions, where cars aren't always expecting cyclists.
