Arta rewards anyone willing to explore beyond its main square, and a bicycle is the easiest way to do it. Pedal along the Arachthos and the four graceful arches of the Arta Bridge come into view, framed by plane trees and the folk song that made it famous. From there it's a short, easy climb up Peranthi hill to the mosaics of Panagia Parigoritissa, or a longer loop out toward the wetlands of the Amvrakikos Gulf, where herons outnumber tourists.
The old town, the bridge and the castle hill all sit within a compact, mostly flat radius, which makes cycling faster than walking and far simpler than dealing with a car in Arta's narrow streets. A rental bike also opens up the countryside around town — quiet roads toward Peta or the first foothills of Tzoumerka — without the hassle of parking or fuel that a car brings for such short hops.
Good news for cyclists: no licence is required to rent a bicycle anywhere in Greece, and there's no minimum age set by law. Some shops in Arta may ask for a small deposit, usually held on a credit card, and a form of ID — but you won't need an International Driving Permit or any paperwork beyond that. This makes a bicycle the simplest option in town if you'd rather skip the licence checks that apply to scooters and motorcycles.
Prices move with the seasons, as they do across Greece. Expect around EUR 3-6 per day in low season, rising to roughly EUR 8-15 per day in high season, and EUR 15-20 per day for premium models with extra comfort or gears.
High season runs from July to August, when temperatures climb well above 30°C and demand for bikes peaks alongside prices. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest rates but cooler, wetter weather for riding. If you can, aim for May-June or September-October: the weather is kinder for cycling and rental prices sit well below the summer peak. Booking a few days ahead is enough outside of high season, but in July and August it's worth reserving earlier to avoid missing out.
Greece drives on the right, so keep that in mind if you're used to the opposite. Bicycles share the road with cars, so ride predictably and give way at junctions near the old town's narrow streets. Speed limits in built-up areas like central Arta are capped at 50 km/h for motor vehicles, which in practice means traffic moves slowly enough for cyclists to mix in comfortably. Alcohol limits for drivers are strict in Greece, so it's best to save the local wine for after you've parked the bike for the day.
