Aegina moves at bicycle speed already, which is exactly why it rewards you for showing up with two wheels instead of four. Pedal out of the neoclassical harbor at Aegina Town, past the Markellos Tower, and within minutes you're free of traffic and gliding along the coast toward Perdika, where fishing boats bob beside waterfront tavernas facing the little islet of Moni. Turn inland instead and the road climbs gently past pistachio groves — the crop this island built its reputation on — toward the Doric columns of the Temple of Aphaea, one of the best-preserved ancient temples anywhere in Greece.
What makes Aegina genuinely made for cycling is scale: the port, the beaches and the inland villages all sit just a few kilometers apart, connected by mostly flat-to-gently-rolling roads. Traffic is light once the morning ferry crowd disperses, and the alternative — a sparse local bus or a rental car you don't need for such short hops — only slows you down. A bicycle turns the coastal run to Perdika and the ride up to the temple into the whole point of the day, not a logistics problem.
None of this requires a licence — cycling is open to everyone, no matter your age or driving experience. Most rental shops will still ask for ID and a modest deposit, usually held on a credit card, before handing over the bike. There's no IDP or paperwork beyond that: pick your bike, leave your details, and ride.
Expect to pay around EUR 3–5 per day for a basic city or beach bike in low season, rising to roughly EUR 8–15 in high season for the same kind of bike. E-bikes typically run EUR 15–25 per day, and premium e-bikes or higher-end mountain and road bikes can reach EUR 20–30.
July and August are Aegina's busiest and priciest months, when the island fills with ferry-day crowds and bikes can sell out at popular shops — booking ahead pays off. May, June, September and October offer the same scenery with thinner crowds and gentler prices, while November to March is the quiet, budget season, though some shops close for the winter entirely.
Greece drives on the right, and while cycling itself needs no licence, it's worth knowing the rules that shape the roads around you. Riders and passengers on any motorized two-wheeler must wear a helmet, with strict enforcement and real fines behind it. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers — a tighter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and new drivers. Island roads can be narrow and occasionally gravelly at the edges, so keep a relaxed pace, especially around blind bends near the coast.
