Trade the rental car for two wheels and La Gomera opens up in a way most visitors never see. Roads here climb straight out of the sea, thread through misty laurel forest, and drop again into terraced valleys like Valle Gran Rey — the kind of descent that makes you understand why cyclists come back year after year. Ride the ridge road at dawn and you might have Roque de Agando entirely to yourself, its volcanic silhouette rising out of the cloud line.

This is a small island with almost no traffic outside San Sebastián, and that's exactly what makes it made for a bike. Distances between villages are short, but the elevation swings hard — sea level to nearly 1,400 metres at Garajonay — so the switchbacks that frustrate a rental car become the whole point on two wheels. An e-bike in particular turns those climbs from a grind into part of the fun, letting you reach viewpoints and hillside villages that the minibus tours simply skip.

Top 10 things to see in La Gomera by bike

  1. Parque Nacional de Garajonay — this UNESCO-listed laurel forest sits at the island's centre, and its roads wind through misty ridges up to viewpoints like Alto de Garajonay.
  2. Los Órganos — a striking basalt-column cliff on the north coast, best reached by riding to Vallehermoso and pairing it with a boat trip or coastal lookout.
  3. Valle Gran Rey — this terraced valley and beach town in the west rewards you with one of the island's classic rides: the long descent from the ridge road down into the valley floor.
  4. San Sebastián de la Gomera — the capital and ferry port, home to Columbus-related sights like Torre del Conde and Casa de Colón, and a natural start or finish for island loops.
  5. Mirador de Abrante — a glass-floored skywalk near Agulo with sweeping views over the north coast and, on a clear day, Tenerife's Mount Teide.
  6. Roque de Agando — one of the island's most striking volcanic plugs, visible from the Garajonay ridge road and a favourite stop for photos.
  7. Playa de Santiago — the sunniest, driest corner of the island, with a flatter coastal stretch that's an easier ride than the mountainous interior.
  8. Agulo — one of La Gomera's prettiest villages, tucked below the Abrante viewpoint and easy to combine into the same loop.
  9. Vallehermoso — a north-coast town overlooked by the Roque Cano volcanic plug, and your gateway to Los Órganos and the coastal trails.
  10. Alajeró — a hilltop village in the south with views down to Playa de Santiago, linking the coast to the central ridge road.

What do you need to rent a bike in La Gomera?

No licence is required to rent a bicycle in Spain, at any age — one less thing to arrange before you land. Most rental companies do ask for a minimum age, commonly 18, and will place a deposit on a credit card in your name; the amount depends on the bike, with e-bikes usually requiring more than a standard mountain bike. Bring a valid ID or passport to collect your bike.

How much does it cost to rent a bike in La Gomera?

A standard city or mountain bike runs from 3 to 8 EUR per day in low season, rising to 10–15 EUR per day in high season. Given the island's climbs, many riders opt for an e-bike, which typically costs 15–25 EUR per day.

  • Prices climb in July and August, the Canary Islands' peak season, with a smaller bump around Christmas and New Year.
  • The cheapest rates run from November through February.
  • Unlike mainland Spain, the Canary Islands rent bikes year-round, so there's no need to wait for a specific season to visit.

When to book a rental bike in La Gomera?

Because the Canary Islands run on their own calendar, La Gomera's high season lines up with the northern winter — book ahead if you're travelling over Christmas, New Year, or in July and August, when demand and prices both peak. For the best value, aim for November to February, when a standard bike can cost as little as 3 EUR per day. Whatever the season, it's worth reserving a few days in advance so your preferred model is waiting when you arrive.

Local traffic rules in La Gomera

Spain drives on the right, and that applies on La Gomera's mountain roads too, narrow as some of them get. Cyclists must wear a helmet on interurban roads regardless of age, though within towns it's only compulsory under 16 — we'd still recommend one everywhere given the terrain. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on the island's main roads and drop to 50 km/h, sometimes 30 km/h, through built-up villages, so cars will generally be moving slowly around you. The blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, and vehicles overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 metres of clearance by law.
