Trade the rental car for two wheels and La Gomera opens up in a way most visitors never see. Roads here climb straight out of the sea, thread through misty laurel forest, and drop again into terraced valleys like Valle Gran Rey — the kind of descent that makes you understand why cyclists come back year after year. Ride the ridge road at dawn and you might have Roque de Agando entirely to yourself, its volcanic silhouette rising out of the cloud line.
This is a small island with almost no traffic outside San Sebastián, and that's exactly what makes it made for a bike. Distances between villages are short, but the elevation swings hard — sea level to nearly 1,400 metres at Garajonay — so the switchbacks that frustrate a rental car become the whole point on two wheels. An e-bike in particular turns those climbs from a grind into part of the fun, letting you reach viewpoints and hillside villages that the minibus tours simply skip.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle in Spain, at any age — one less thing to arrange before you land. Most rental companies do ask for a minimum age, commonly 18, and will place a deposit on a credit card in your name; the amount depends on the bike, with e-bikes usually requiring more than a standard mountain bike. Bring a valid ID or passport to collect your bike.
A standard city or mountain bike runs from 3 to 8 EUR per day in low season, rising to 10–15 EUR per day in high season. Given the island's climbs, many riders opt for an e-bike, which typically costs 15–25 EUR per day.
Because the Canary Islands run on their own calendar, La Gomera's high season lines up with the northern winter — book ahead if you're travelling over Christmas, New Year, or in July and August, when demand and prices both peak. For the best value, aim for November to February, when a standard bike can cost as little as 3 EUR per day. Whatever the season, it's worth reserving a few days in advance so your preferred model is waiting when you arrive.
Spain drives on the right, and that applies on La Gomera's mountain roads too, narrow as some of them get. Cyclists must wear a helmet on interurban roads regardless of age, though within towns it's only compulsory under 16 — we'd still recommend one everywhere given the terrain. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on the island's main roads and drop to 50 km/h, sometimes 30 km/h, through built-up villages, so cars will generally be moving slowly around you. The blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, and vehicles overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 metres of clearance by law.
