Villajoyosa doesn't feel like a place you're meant to rush through in a car. Its old town spills right down to the water, a wall of pastel-painted houses facing the harbour, and the whole seafront from the beach at Playa del Centro out toward Playa de la Almadraba is one long, easy stretch of promenade. Hop on a bike and you can drift past the fishing boats, stop wherever the light looks good on the façades, and be at the sand five minutes later — no parking to hunt for, no traffic to fight.
That's really the whole case for exploring on two wheels here. The old town is compact and mostly flat, its lanes too narrow and too pretty to be worth navigating by car, while the coast is stitched together by a continuous promenade built for walking and cycling rather than driving. A bike also opens up the old railway line converted into a greenway heading inland, and makes the longer run down the coast into Benidorm a pleasant outing instead of a parking headache.
Good news: no licence is required to rent a bicycle in Spain, whatever your age. Most rental partners set their own minimum age, typically around 16 or 18, and will usually ask for a deposit blocked on a card in the renter's name. Since no licence is needed, an International Driving Permit isn't relevant here either — just bring ID and a card for the deposit.
Expect around 3–8 EUR per day in low season, rising to 10–18 EUR per day in high season. If you'd rather ride an e-bike or a premium hybrid or road bike, budget 15–25 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, when the beaches fill up and prices sit at their yearly high — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lightest crowds and the lowest prices landing in November, December, January and February. If you want warm weather without the summer price tag, May, June, September and October hit that balance well.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists must wear a helmet on interurban roads regardless of age, and it's compulsory in built-up areas only for riders under 16 — worth wearing one regardless, especially if you're heading out along the coastal path. Vehicles overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance, and speed limits in town generally sit at 50 km/h, dropping to 30 km/h or even 20 km/h on narrower single-lane streets, so traffic moves slowly around you. If you're riding at night outside built-up areas, lights and a reflective garment are required. And as everywhere in Spain, handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
