Picture stepping out of your hotel in Duong Dong just as the sky over the harbor turns pink behind Dinh Cau Rock. Instead of waiting for a taxi or trudging along the roadside, you hop on your own scooter and you're there in five minutes. That's the appeal of getting around this way — you set the pace, and a sunset at Dinh Cau or a plate of grilled squid at the Duong Dong Night Market is never more than a short ride away.

Phu Quoc has no trains and no metro, and taxis add up fast if you're moving between the beach, the market and the harbor more than once a day. The island's roads are mostly flat, quiet and easy to read, which makes a scooter the natural way to cover ground between sights that sit several kilometers apart. It's also the only practical way to string together a full loop — south to Sao Beach or north through the national park — without paying for a car and driver each time.

Top 10 things to see in Duong Dong by scooter

  1. Dinh Cau Rock — a small seaside shrine right in town, a five-minute ride for sunset views over the harbor.
  2. Duong Dong Night Market — the central market on Nguyen Trai street, an easy short ride for seafood and souvenirs after dark.
  3. Long Beach (Bai Truong) — the main west-coast beach strip south of town, lined with resorts and sunset bars.
  4. Sunset Sanato Beach Club — a popular stretch of Long Beach for sunset drinks, reached by a scenic coastal ride.
  5. Ham Ninh Fishing Village — a cross-island ride to a stilt village on the east coast, known for crab and calm water views.
  6. Phu Quoc National Park (Bai Thom / Ganh Dau route) — a winding jungle road through the island's forested north, ideal for a longer loop.
  7. Suoi Tranh Waterfall — a short ride inland to a jungle stream and waterfall, a favorite cooling-off stop.
  8. Ganh Dau Cape — the island's northwestern tip, with a quiet beach and views toward Cambodia.
  9. Cua Can Village and Beach — a rustic fishing village between Duong Dong and the north, a relaxed coastal detour.
  10. Sao Beach (Bai Sao) — white sand on the southeast coast, a classic full-day loop from Duong Dong.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Duong Dong?

For a standard automatic under 50cc — the model most visitors choose — Vietnam does not require a driving licence at all, which makes this the easiest way to get moving on the island. Anything above 50cc calls for a proper motorcycle licence, and if you're not Vietnamese that means a Vietnamese licence or a valid International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 convention and endorsed for motorcycles; note that 1949 Geneva-style IDPs, the kind issued in the US and Japan, are not accepted here. Rental shops generally set their own minimum age, usually 18 even for the smaller bikes. Expect to leave a deposit, either in cash or your passport held as security, with the amount varying by shop and by bike.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Duong Dong?

A standard automatic scooter runs roughly 120,000–150,000 VND per day in low season and 150,000–200,000 VND per day in high season. If you'd rather ride something bigger or newer, like a Honda SH or a Vespa-style model, budget 200,000–350,000 VND per day.

  • Prices climb from December through March, when dry-season crowds and the Tet holiday push demand up and bikes get scarce.
  • Prices ease from May through October, though September and October can bring storm disruptions worth checking before you commit to a route.

When to book a rental scooter in Duong Dong?

If you're chasing the best weather and don't mind paying a bit more, aim for the November-to-April high season, with December through March the busiest and priciest stretch — book a few days ahead if you're arriving around Tet, since shops sell out and some close for the holiday. For lower prices and thinner crowds, May through September is your window, just keep an eye on the forecast in the later rainy months.

Local traffic rules in Duong Dong

Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or motorcycle, and police do check. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for riders, enforced with roadside breath tests, so plan on riding home sober after those sunset drinks. Speed limits are posted and differ between town and open road, so read the signs as you go rather than guessing. Turning right on red isn't generally allowed unless a sign says otherwise, and headlights are required after dark.
