If someday you will be in Hoi An, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and public transport. You can always rent a scooter in Hoi An on our website and explore this lantern-lit riverside town at your own pace. Hoi An’s UNESCO-listed Ancient Town is best explored on foot, but the moment you want to reach An Bang Beach, the rice paddies of Tra Que or the ancient ruins of My Son, a scooter becomes the easiest and most enjoyable way to get there.

The wider Hoi An area suits a scooter well: the roads out to the coast and the countryside are flat, quiet and scenic, running past rice fields, fishing villages and coconut palms. On a scooter you can watch the sunset from An Bang Beach, cycle-free through the vegetable gardens of Tra Que, or make the longer trip out to the Cham ruins of My Son before the day-trip buses arrive.

Top 10 things to see in Hoi An by scooter

  1. Hoi An Ancient Town — the UNESCO World Heritage old quarter of lantern-strung streets, merchant houses and riverside cafes.
  2. Japanese Covered Bridge — the town’s iconic 400-year-old bridge, small but unmissable in the heart of the old quarter.
  3. An Bang Beach — a relaxed sandy beach a short ride from town, popular for sunset drinks and fresh seafood.
  4. Cua Dai Beach — another easy-to-reach beach south of An Bang, quieter and good for a swim.
  5. Tra Que Vegetable Village — a working organic herb and vegetable village where you can watch (or join) the farming.
  6. My Son Sanctuary — a UNESCO World Heritage site of ancient Cham temple ruins set among forested hills, a longer ride out of town.
  7. Cam Thanh Coconut Forest (Bay Mau) — a network of water coconut canals famous for basket-boat rides.
  8. Thu Bon River & riverside promenade — the river that runs through town, lovely by lantern light in the evening.
  9. Tan Ky Old House — a beautifully preserved two-century-old merchant house open to visitors in the Ancient Town.
  10. Marble Mountains (northern approach) — the limestone hills and cave pagodas on the road toward Da Nang, an easy detour if you are heading that way.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Hoi An?

Required documents vary between rental companies, but common rules are as follows: you should be at least 18 years old; for a 125cc machine an A1 licence is usually expected, while larger scooters call for a full A-class motorcycle licence. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence — strictly, a Vietnamese-recognised motorcycle licence is required to ride legally, so check the terms of the specific provider on the booking page. Most companies also ask for a deposit, paid in cash or by card and refunded when you return the scooter in good condition.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Hoi An?

Scooter rental in Hoi An starts from around 130,000 VND per day and runs up to about 330,000 VND per day for a larger, newer automatic model. Prices in Hoi An follow the weather closely, since heavy rain can affect both roads and river levels:

  • February–August (dry, high season) — sunny, dry weather draws the most visitors: expect roughly 190,000–330,000 VND per day.
  • September and January (shoulder season) — quieter months on either side of the rains, with prices around 160,000–240,000 VND per day.
  • October–December (rainy, low season) — the wettest months, with the lowest demand and prices, often from around 130,000 VND per day.

In short, you will pay the most from spring through summer when the town is dry and busy, and the least during the rainy months at the end of the year, when the Thu Bon River can rise and occasionally flood parts of the Ancient Town. Booking a few days ahead is worthwhile during the dry season and around Vietnamese holidays, when Hoi An’s popularity pushes demand up quickly.

When to book a rental scooter in Hoi An?

Hoi An has a distinct wet season, and it is worth planning around it. The dry season runs roughly from February to August, with warm, sunny days that are ideal for riding to the beach or countryside. From September to December the rains set in, often heavily in October and November, and the Thu Bon River can rise enough to flood low-lying streets of the Ancient Town during the worst storms — check local conditions if you are travelling in this window. If you want reliably dry riding weather, aim for the dry season; if you want a quieter town and lower prices and are prepared for the occasional downpour, the shoulder months of September or January are a reasonable compromise.

Local traffic rules

In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger, and the police do enforce it. Speed limits in built-up areas are typically 40–50 km/h. There is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. Hoi An’s Ancient Town centre is largely pedestrianised at certain hours, so check current access rules before riding in, and expect narrow lanes crowded with cyclists and pedestrians. On the roads out to the beaches and countryside, watch for market traffic, livestock and unlit vehicles after dark, and take care on unpaved sections near the rice paddies after rain.
