Picture this: the sun's just up over My Khe Beach, the air is still cool, and you're the only one on the road with the sea on one side and the city waking up on the other. That's what a morning in Da Nang looks like when you skip the taxi queue and rent a scooter in Da Nang instead. An hour later you could be winding along the coast road to the Marble Mountains, or climbing the forested switchbacks of Son Tra Peninsula with the Lady Buddha watching over the bay below.
Da Nang's attractions are spread wide — a city beach, a mountain pass, an old town 30–40 minutes south, a peninsula with cliff roads a car can't hug as tightly. A taxi turns that into an expensive, start-stop day; a scooter turns it into one long, easy ride. Traffic here is noticeably calmer than in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, and the coastal roads are in good shape, so even first-time riders settle in fast. Scooter hire in Da Nang is really the only way to string all these places together in a single day without watching the clock.
For anything under 50cc — the standard tourist rental — you don't need a driving licence at all in Vietnam. Anything bigger requires a motorcycle licence, and if you're not Vietnamese, either a local licence or a valid IDP issued under the 1968 convention (the American, Japanese and some other 1949-style IDPs are not accepted). Rental shops usually set their own minimum age, generally higher than the legal minimum, and will ask for a cash deposit or hold your passport as security.
A basic automatic scooter runs about 120,000–150,000 VND per day in low season, rising to roughly 180,000–250,000 VND per day in high season. Want something bigger or newer, like a Honda SH or a Vespa? Expect 300,000–500,000+ VND per day.
December to March is high season here — drier, cooler weather draws the crowds, and bikes get booked up fast, especially around Tet (late January into February), when many shops close for the holiday. If you'd rather pay less and ride with fewer people around, May through August is quieter, though hotter and more humid; September and October are cheaper too, but come with typhoon risk along the central coast. Whichever window you pick, booking a few days ahead in high season saves you from turning up to an empty rental shop.
Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and it's routinely enforced, so don't skip it even for a five-minute ride. There's a zero-alcohol limit for anyone riding a scooter — even one drink can mean a fine at a checkpoint. Speed limits are lower in built-up areas than on the open road, and lower for scooters than for cars, so read the signage rather than guessing. Scooters aren't allowed on expressways or some bridges and tunnels, and headlights are required after dark. If you want to rent a scooter in Da Nang, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
