Picture leaving the hotel with nothing but a helmet and a full tank, crossing the Han River as the Dragon Bridge catches the evening light, and being on My Khe Beach in time for sunrise. That kind of morning is exactly what you get when you rent a motorbike in Da Nang — the city and everything around it opens up the moment you're on two wheels instead of waiting for a taxi. One day you're climbing toward the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills, held up by those giant stone hands; the next you're tracing the jungle road around Son Tra Peninsula with the whole bay spread out below the Lady Buddha statue.

Da Nang was practically built for this. The sights aren't clustered in one old quarter — they're scattered across a wide arc, from the city beach to mountain passes to Hoi An's lantern-lit lanes 30km south, distances a scooter eats up easily but a car (or a bus tour) makes slow and expensive to actually enjoy. Traffic here is far calmer than in Hanoi or Saigon, the roads are smooth, and routes like the Hai Van Pass or the Son Tra loop are genuinely made for riding, not just driving through. A scooter rental in Da Nang lets you stop wherever the view demands it, something no tour bus will ever do.

Top 10 things to see in Da Nang by motorbike

  1. Ba Na Hills & Golden Bridge — ride up to the base and take the cable car to the famous bridge cradled by giant stone hands, Da Nang's signature day trip.
  2. Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son) — five marble and limestone hills just south of the city, riddled with caves, pagodas and viewpoints, and an easy short ride.
  3. Son Tra Peninsula / Monkey Mountain — a winding coastal mountain road through jungle canopy, past the Lady Buddha statue, with sweeping bay viewpoints.
  4. Hai Van Pass — the legendary coastal pass between Da Nang and Hue, made famous by Top Gear, with panoramic ocean views from the old French bunker at the top.
  5. My Khe Beach — Da Nang's main city beach, minutes from the center, perfect for a swim, sunrise or fresh seafood.
  6. Hoi An Ancient Town — the UNESCO old town about 30km south, an easy coastal or riverside ride for lantern-lit streets and tailor shops.
  7. Ba Na to Hoi An back road — a scenic route stitching together coast, countryside and rice paddies between the two towns.
  8. Dragon Bridge — Da Nang's fire- and water-breathing bridge over the Han River, best crossed at night on weekends.
  9. Suoi Mo waterfalls area — cooler hillside streams on the way toward Ba Na, a good stop for a swim break.
  10. Nam O Beach & fishing village — a quiet, traditional stretch of coast near the foot of Hai Van Pass, good for local seafood away from the crowds.

What do you need to rent a motorbike in Da Nang?

If you're sticking to a scooter under 50cc — the standard tourist rental — no driving licence is required in Vietnam at all. Anything bigger, and you'll need a motorcycle licence: a Vietnamese one, or a valid International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 convention and endorsed for motorcycles (the 1949-convention IDP from the US, Japan and a few other countries won't be accepted). Most shops set their own minimum age, usually 18, even though under-50cc bikes can technically be ridden younger. Expect to leave a deposit, either cash or your passport held as security, with the amount depending on the shop and the bike.

How much does it cost to rent a motorbike in Da Nang?

A basic automatic scooter runs around 120,000–150,000 VND per day in low season, and 180,000–250,000 VND per day in high season. If you want something with more power for the Hai Van Pass, like a Honda Winner or Yamaha NVX, budget 300,000–500,000+ VND per day.

  • Prices climb during June–August and around Tet (late January to mid-February), when demand from local and foreign travellers peaks together.
  • September to December is the quietest and cheapest stretch, thanks to the rainy season.

When to book a rental motorbike in Da Nang?

High season nationally runs November to April, plus a second domestic peak in June–August, so book a few days ahead if you're arriving then — especially around Tet, when bikes get scarce and shops raise prices or close altogether. Central Vietnam has its own quirk: September to November is typhoon and flood season here, making it the low season locally even though prices are cheap. For the best riding weather and the easiest availability, aim for February to April.

Local traffic rules in Da Nang

Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or motorbike, and checks are routine. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for riders, enforced with roadside breath tests, particularly at night. Speed limits depend on the road and whether you're inside a built-up area, so read the signs rather than assuming a fixed number, and remember there's no right turn on red unless a sign says otherwise. Motorbikes are barred from expressways and some bridges and tunnels, and headlights are required after dark.
