If someday you will be in Con Dao, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and the occasional taxi. You can always rent a motorcycle in Con Dao on our website and explore this quiet island archipelago at your own pace — riding the ridge road above empty beaches, visiting the old prison sites in Con Son town, or slipping out to a cove that only opens up once you leave the harbour behind. A motorcycle is by far the best way to see an island where the appeal is silence, forest and coastline rather than crowds. On this page you will find a full guide to motorcycle rental in Con Dao.
Con Dao is small and largely protected as national park, so this is not a place for long highway miles — the reward is a short, scenic loop road that climbs over forested ridges and drops to secluded beaches, best enjoyed slowly. Traffic is minimal outside Con Son town, the main road hugs a dramatic coastline, and a motorcycle lets you stop at any viewpoint or beach access track along the way.
Required documents vary between rental companies, but common rules are as follows: you should be at least 18 years old; for engines up to 125cc an A1 licence is usually expected, while larger motorcycles call for a full A-class licence. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence — strictly, a Vietnamese-recognised motorcycle licence is required to ride legally, so check the terms of the specific provider on the booking page. Most companies also ask for a deposit, paid in cash or by card and refunded when you return the motorcycle in good condition.
Motorcycle rental in Con Dao starts from around 650,000 VND per day for a mid-size machine and runs up to roughly 1,100,000–1,300,000 VND per day for a bigger or newer model. What you pay depends on the engine size and, importantly, on the time of year, though because Con Dao's fleet is small, prices here are somewhat less elastic than on the mainland. Prices on the island follow a fairly clear seasonal pattern:
Within any season, weekends and Vietnamese public holidays are the real peak — that is when the small local fleet sells out first and prices edge up. Because supply is limited on the island, we advise booking well ahead, especially in the high season.
The dry season, from March to September, is by far the most reliable time to visit, with calm seas for the ferry crossing, steady flights and pleasant riding weather. The wetter months from October to February bring rougher seas, more rain and a higher chance of transport disruptions, though the island is at its most peaceful. If you want reliable weather and full access to the coastal road, aim for the dry season; if you want the best price and don't mind the odd shower, the low season is kinder to your wallet.
In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger, and this is enforced even on this quiet island. Speed limits in Con Son town are typically 40–50 km/h, and the coastal ridge road, while quiet, has enough bends and gradient to warrant a moderate pace. There is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. Fuel stops are sparse outside town, so top up before setting out on the loop. Because much of the island is protected forest, wildlife occasionally crosses the road, especially around dawn and dusk — ride slowly and watch the verges.
