If someday you will be in Con Dao, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and the odd taxi. You can always rent a scooter in Con Dao on our website and explore this quiet archipelago at your own pace. Con Son, the main island, is small, green and largely free of traffic, with a single ring road linking the town, the old French prison sites, Con Dao National Park and a string of near-empty beaches. A scooter is by far the best way to see it all, from the sunrise over Dam Trau Beach to the forested passes of the national park.

The island suits a scooter perfectly: distances are short, the main road is well paved and quiet, and many of the best spots — hidden coves, jungle trailheads, remote viewpoints — have no other way to reach them. There is barely any traffic to speak of, so even a first-time rider will feel at ease within minutes of picking up the keys.

Top 10 things to see in Con Dao by scooter

  1. Con Son Town — the sleepy island capital with French colonial buildings, a seafront promenade and a lively night market.
  2. Con Dao Prison Complex — the historic “tiger cages” and colonial-era jails, a sobering and important stop on the island.
  3. Hang Duong Cemetery — the resting place of thousands of Vietnamese political prisoners, visited by locals every night at dusk.
  4. Dam Trau Beach — a short ride past the airport to one of Vietnam’s most beautiful, unspoiled beaches.
  5. Bai Nhat Beach — a tidal beach that appears only at low tide, reached by a scenic coastal track.
  6. Con Dao National Park headquarters — trailheads for jungle hikes and information on the island’s wildlife and turtle nesting beaches.
  7. So Ray (Ong Dou Fruit Garden) — a former royal orchard tucked in the hills, reached via a quiet forest road.
  8. An Hai and An Hoi villages — small fishing hamlets along the coast road, good for fresh seafood.
  9. Ma Thien Lanh Bridge ruins — an unfinished colonial-era bridge in the hills, an atmospheric detour off the ring road.
  10. Nha Cong Quan (former Governor’s Residence) — a hilltop French villa with sweeping views over Con Son Bay.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Con Dao?

Requirements vary between rental companies, but common rules are as follows: you should be at least 18 years old, though some scooters are available from 16; for a 125cc machine an A1 licence is usually expected, while larger scooters call for a full A-class motorcycle licence. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence — strictly, a Vietnamese-recognised motorcycle licence is required to ride legally, so check the terms of the specific provider on the booking page. Most companies also ask for a deposit, paid in cash or by card and refunded when you return the scooter in good condition.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Con Dao?

Scooter rental in Con Dao starts from around 140,000 VND per day for a small automatic and runs up to about 350,000 VND per day for a larger or newer model. Because almost everything on the island, including fuel, arrives by boat or plane, prices sit a little above the mainland average, and they move with the calendar too:

  • High season (roughly November–April) — calm seas, dry weather and the busiest flights bring the highest demand: expect around 220,000–350,000 VND per day.
  • Low season (roughly June–September) — rougher seas keep ferry arrivals down and the island quiet, so rates fall to around 140,000–220,000 VND per day.
  • Shoulder months (May, October) — sit between the two, with prices somewhere in the middle.

In short, the driest, calmest months command the highest prices, while the rainier stretch of the year is kindest to your budget. Because Con Dao has limited flight seats and only a modest number of scooters in circulation, we advise booking a few days ahead regardless of season.

When to book a rental scooter in Con Dao?

The best weather runs from November to April, when the sea is calm, skies are mostly clear and the island is at its most popular with divers and beach-goers. From June to September the south-west monsoon brings rougher seas, more frequent showers and occasional ferry disruptions, though the island still remains lovely and much quieter. May and October are transitional months and often a good compromise between weather and price.

Local traffic rules

In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger. Speed limits in Con Son town are typically 40–50 km/h, and there is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. The island’s roads are quiet and scenic, but petrol stations are sparse — fill up in town before heading out to the national park or Dam Trau Beach, and allow a little extra time, since some stretches pass through forest with no phone signal.
