Picture waking up in Nha Trang with the whole coast open in front of you: a ride up to Po Nagar Cham Towers before the heat sets in, lunch by the water, then an afternoon spent chasing the light along Hon Chong Promontory. That's the kind of day a scooter buys you here — one where you decide the route, not a tour bus schedule. Renting a scooter in Nha Trang means you can be at a hilltop pagoda one hour and a quiet stretch of sand the next, without waiting on anyone.
Nha Trang was practically made for two wheels. The city beach, the old quarter and the hillside temples all sit within a short ride of each other, but the real rewards — waterfalls, mountain reserves, empty beaches — are 25 to 50 km out, too far to walk and frustrating by taxi if you want to stop for photos along the way. Traffic here is calmer than in Hanoi or Saigon, the roads out to the main sights are paved and well kept, and once you have your own bike you can pull over whenever a viewpoint, a village stall or a stretch of coast asks you to.
For scooters under 50cc — the standard tourist rental — no driving licence is required in Vietnam. Anything larger needs a motorcycle licence, and foreigners should carry a Vietnamese licence or a 1968-convention International Driving Permit; the 1949-style IDP issued in the US and a few other countries isn't valid here. Rental shops usually set their own minimum age, typically 18, even though smaller bikes can legally be ridden younger. Expect to leave a deposit, either in cash or your passport held as security, with the amount depending on the shop and the bike.
A standard automatic such as a Honda Wave Alpha, Honda Blade or Yamaha Sirius runs 100,000–130,000 VND per day in low season and 130,000–180,000 VND in high season. If you want something newer or bigger, like a Honda Air Blade or Honda PCX, budget 200,000–300,000+ VND per day.
High season runs roughly November to April for international visitors, with a second, domestic-driven peak in June to August; Tet in particular can leave shops short on bikes and prices raised, so book ahead if you're arriving then. For a better deal and easier availability, aim for the shoulder months of April–June or September–October, when demand — and prices — ease off.
Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and this is enforced routinely with on-the-spot fines. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone riding, checked at roadside stops especially at night and around holidays. Speed limits are lower in built-up areas than on the open road and are always posted on signs, so read as you go rather than assuming a fixed number. Scooters aren't allowed on expressways or certain bridges and tunnels, and headlights are required after dark.
