Picture the road out of town at golden hour: red dunes glowing on one side, fishing boats bobbing in the bay on the other, and nowhere to be but wherever the coast takes you next. That's the pitch for a scooter rental in Mui Ne — you can be wading barefoot through the Fairy Stream one hour and watching the sun drop over the Red Sand Dunes the next, without waiting on a driver or a bus timetable.
Mui Ne stretches along a single long coastal strip, with a few of its best sights — the White Sand Dunes, Ke Ga Lighthouse, Ta Cu Mountain — sitting well inland or further down the coast. There's no dense public transport network to knit it together, and the distances make walking or taxi-hopping impractical for a full day out. A scooter fixes that: the roads are mostly flat and easy, so even a first-time rider can string together dunes, village and coastline at their own pace, stopping wherever the view asks for it.
For anything under 50cc — the standard tourist rental — no driving licence is required in Vietnam. Rental shops usually set their own minimum age, generally 18, even though younger riders are sometimes permitted on these smaller machines. If you plan to ride anything larger, you'll need a motorcycle licence, and as a foreigner that means either a Vietnamese licence or a valid international driving permit issued under the 1968 convention — a 1949 Geneva-style IDP, such as those issued in the US or Japan, won't be accepted. Expect to leave a deposit, either in cash or by having the shop hold your passport; the amount varies by shop and by bike.
Average rental price is around 120,000–130,000 VND per day during low season, rising to about 150,000–200,000 VND during high season. Larger or newer automatic scooters run higher, around 200,000–300,000 VND per day.
High season runs November to April, and this is when scooters are in the highest demand and priced accordingly — book a few days ahead if you're arriving during Tết, when many shops close and bikes get scarce fast. Low season, May to September, brings afternoon downpours but also thinner crowds and the cheapest daily rates, so it's worth considering if flexible dry spells suit your trip better than guaranteed sunshine.
Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or moped, and this is enforced with on-the-spot fines. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone riding, checked at roadside stops especially at night and around holidays. Speed limits depend on the road and whether you're inside town, so follow the posted signs rather than assuming a fixed number, and remember there's no general right-turn-on-red here unless a sign says otherwise. Once you're ready, just use the search form at the top of the page to rent a scooter in Mui Ne. Have a nice trip!
