Mui Ne has a way of turning a lazy beach stop into a full-blown adventure once you throw a scooter into the mix. Picture pulling off the coastal road at the Red Sand Dunes just as the light turns gold, then following the same stretch of tarmac the next morning to watch fishermen haul in the day's catch at the harbor. Nothing here is more than a short ride away, and that changes what your trip actually looks like.

The whole town is strung along a single coastal road, with its best sights spread over 20–30km — too far to walk, and awkward to see properly by taxi when you want to stop every few minutes for a photo or a swim. A scooter fixes that. Traffic here is far gentler than in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, the roads are flat and mostly hug the coast, and that combination makes Mui Ne one of the easiest places in Vietnam to ride yourself, even if you've never driven one before.

Top 10 things to see in Mui Ne by scooter

  1. Mui Ne Red Sand Dunes (Đồi Cát Đỏ) — compact dunes right off the coastal road, an easy short ride for sunset photos.
  2. White Sand Dunes (Đồi Cát Trắng / Bàu Trắng) — a bigger dune field about 25–30km from town, the classic half-day loop past a freshwater lake.
  3. Fairy Stream (Suối Tiên) — park at the entrance and wade barefoot through a shallow stream between eroded canyon walls.
  4. Mui Ne Fishing Village & Harbor — round basket boats bobbing in the water, liveliest at the early-morning fish market.
  5. Ganh Beach — a rocky cape near Hon Rom with tide pools and viewpoints, a scenic stop on the way east.
  6. Hon Rom Beach — quieter and greener than the main strip, a favourite short ride for swimming away from the crowds.
  7. Po Shanu Cham Towers — small hilltop ruins on the way into town, with a panoramic view over Phan Thiet Bay.
  8. Bau Sen Lake — a freshwater lake near the White Dunes, easy to combine on the northern loop.
  9. Coastal Road to Ke Ga Cape — a scenic ride south toward Vietnam's tallest lighthouse and sleepy fishing hamlets.
  10. Phan Thiet Old Town & Fish Sauce Villages — a short detour into the provincial capital for the harbor, market and traditional fish sauce makers.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Mui Ne?

For a standard scooter under 50cc — the type almost every visitor rents — Vietnam requires no driving licence at all. Anything larger does call for a motorcycle licence, plus an International Driving Permit if you're a foreigner. Rental shops usually set their own minimum age, generally 18, even though local rules technically allow younger riders on smaller bikes. Expect to leave a deposit, either in cash or by having the shop hold your passport as security; the amount varies by shop and by how long you're renting.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Mui Ne?

A manual scooter runs roughly 75,000–90,000 VND per day in low season, and about 120,000–180,000 VND per day in high season. Automatic scooters or bigger-cc bikes push that up to around 150,000–250,000 VND per day.

  • Prices climb from December through March, the peak of the dry season and the busiest stretch for international visitors.
  • April to June and September to October are the cheapest months, when demand eases off.

When to book a rental scooter in Mui Ne?

High season runs November to April, with prices at their steepest from December to March — book ahead if you're arriving then, since bikes can run short. Low season falls between May and September, when the daily rate drops and there's rarely a need to reserve far in advance. If you'd rather skip the crowds and pay less, aim for the shoulder months of April to June or September to October.

Local traffic rules in Mui Ne

Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or moped, and checks are routine, so don't skip one to save time. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone riding, enforced through roadside breath tests, especially at night. Speed limits are lower inside town than on the open coastal road and are always signposted, so read the signs rather than guessing. If you're using an International Driving Permit, make sure it's the 1968-convention format — the 1949 Geneva version issued in the US and a few other countries isn't valid here.
