Skip the taxi queue and the midday heat and slip through Duong Dong on two wheels instead. A bicycle gets you down to Dinh Cau Rock for the sunset crowd, along the seafood stalls of the night market, and out onto the long curve of Long Beach without ever fighting for a parking spot. It is the easiest way to feel like you actually live here, if only for an afternoon.
Duong Dong is built for this kind of riding. The coastal roads in and around town are flat to gently rolling, traffic is light compared to Vietnam's mainland cities, and most of the sights worth seeing from the center are a short, breezy pedal apart. If you want to go further — across the island to Sao Beach or up to Ganh Dau — a scooter is the better tool, but for exploring Duong Dong itself, a bicycle rental keeps things simple, cheap and unhurried.
Nothing complicated. Vietnam sets no licence, registration or minimum age requirement for pedal cycles, and helmets aren't legally required for cyclists either. Some rental shops ask for a small cash deposit or hold your passport as security, but that's the extent of the paperwork — no IDP, no forms.
A standard city or beach bike runs roughly 70,000–90,000 VND per day in low season and 100,000–150,000 VND per day in high season. If you want a mountain bike or an electric-assist model for the longer rides, expect 150,000–250,000 VND per day.
December through April is the reliably dry stretch across southern Vietnam, and it's also Phu Quoc's busiest and most expensive window — book a few days ahead if you're arriving around Tet. For lower prices and thinner crowds, aim for June to September; just expect a short, heavy afternoon downpour now and then rather than all-day rain.
Vietnam drives on the right. Bicycles carry none of the helmet, licence or alcohol restrictions that apply to scooters and motorcycles here, so you're free to just get on and ride. That said, it's worth riding defensively: local traffic can be dense near the market and waterfront in the evening, and streetlighting thins out fast once you leave the town center, so a front light is a good idea after dark even though it isn't a legal requirement for cyclists.
