Duong Dong isn't a place you want to see through a taxi window. Rent a quad bike here and the whole west coast opens up at your own pace — the red dunes of Sunset Sanhill glowing at golden hour, the long curve of Long Beach with the sun dropping into the Gulf of Thailand, the fishing boats bobbing below Dinh Cau Rock as the night market lights come on. On a quad you stop when something catches your eye instead of watching it slide past.
Phu Quoc's roads are a mix of smooth coastal tarmac, sandy village lanes and the odd stretch of loose dirt once you turn inland — exactly the terrain a scooter struggles with and a quad handles without drama. The extra stability and cargo space also make it the easier choice for anyone new to two-wheeled traffic, while still letting you reach beaches, waterfalls and fishing villages far beyond walking distance from Duong Dong.
Quad bikes here run mostly on dunes, tracks and private land through local operators, who supervise the ride rather than checking for a formal licence, so this is the most beginner-friendly option on the island. Most shops set a minimum age of 18 and ask for a deposit — usually cash, sometimes your passport held as security. If you also plan to ride a scooter or motorcycle around Duong Dong, bring an International Driving Permit in the 1968 format, since the US-style 1949 version isn't recognised in Vietnam.
Expect around 380,000–420,000 VND per day in low season, rising to about 500,000–650,000 VND per day in high season. Larger or newer models with four seats or bigger engines run roughly 700,000–900,000 VND per day.
December to February is Phu Quoc's busiest and driest stretch, so book ahead if you're travelling then — bikes get scarce and prices sit at their highest. April to September is the quieter, cheaper season, with warm weather broken up by short afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain. If you want dry roads without the peak-season price tag, the shoulder weeks either side of the high season are worth watching.
Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike on any motorised two- or four-wheeler, and checks are routine. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit — any detectable alcohol counts as an offence, with roadside testing common at night and around holidays. Speed limits are lower in town than on the open road and are always signposted, so read the signs rather than guessing. Headlights are required after dark, and motorcycles and scooters are barred from expressways and some bridges.
