Picture skipping the loop entirely and heading straight for the jungle: bumping along the track toward Bamboo Lagoon as the forest opens onto still, mirror-flat water, or parking right on the sand at Dam Trau Beach after a short ride in from the airport road. A quad bike rental in Con Dao puts places like these within easy reach, along with the harbour road, the old prison grounds, and the hiking trailheads scattered through the national park.

Con Dao is a small island — the whole paved loop runs under 50km — with light traffic and a mix of surfaces: smooth coastal tarmac one minute, rougher jungle or beach-access track the next. That's exactly the terrain where a quad's stability and ground clearance pay off, especially if you're new to riding or sharing one vehicle as a couple or family. Scooters struggle on the sandier stretches toward the north side of the island; a quad just rolls over them.

Top 10 things to see in Con Dao by quad bike

  1. Con Dao Prison System (Phu Hai, Phu Tuong "Tiger Cages") — the island's most visited heritage site, a French- and US-era prison complex.
  2. Hang Duong Cemetery — the national memorial cemetery, including Vo Thi Sau's grave, where locals gather for a quiet evening visit.
  3. Dam Trau Beach — the island's best swimming beach, a short scenic ride from the airport.
  4. An Hai Beach and An Hai Market — a town-side beach and night market strip, an easy sunset loop from most rentals.
  5. Con Son Town waterfront (Ton Duc Thang street) — the palm-lined bay road along the harbour, best ridden at dusk.
  6. So Ray (Ma Thien Lanh) Waterfall trailhead — a jungle road leading into Con Dao National Park's hiking trails.
  7. Con Dao National Park Headquarters and Museum — your starting point for trekking routes and turtle-watching permits.
  8. Bamboo Lagoon (Dam Tre Bay) — a scenic ride combining forest track and lagoon views on the island's north side.
  9. Ma Thien Lanh Bridge — an unfinished French colonial-era bridge, now a favourite photo stop on the interior road.
  10. Con Son Pier (Cau Tau 914) — a historic pier at the edge of town, named for the labourers who died building it.

What do you need to rent a quad bike in Con Dao?

Quad bikes here aren't treated as ordinary road vehicles — they're mostly ridden on tracks, dunes and park roads through the rental operator, who typically supervises the ride rather than checking for a licence. It's still sensible to bring a driving licence and, if you have one, an International Driving Permit in the 1968 format (the 1949 Geneva-style IDP issued in the US and a few other countries is not recognised in Vietnam). Most operators ask for a cash deposit or hold your passport as security, and set their own minimum age — expect it to be higher than the general 18-and-up baseline for motorised vehicles.

How much does it cost to rent a quad bike in Con Dao?

A standard quad runs from around 370,000 to 420,000 VND per day in low season, rising to roughly 600,000–800,000 VND in high season. Larger or newer two-seat models go for about 900,000–1,200,000 VND per day.

  • Prices peak December to February, driven by the dry season and the Tết holiday, with a smaller bump in July–August as domestic travellers arrive.
  • Rates drop in the shoulder months of April–May and September–October, the best time to find a bargain.

When to book a rental quad bike in Con Dao?

If you're chasing the best prices, aim for April–May or September–October, when demand eases and rates sit closer to the low-season range. December through February is Con Dao's busiest and priciest stretch — dry, sunny weather plus the Tết holiday period, when bikes can sell out and it's worth booking a few days ahead. July and August bring a second, smaller wave of domestic visitors, so a little advance planning helps then too.

Local traffic rules in Con Dao

Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a motorised vehicle, and checks are routine — don't skip one even for a short hop to the beach. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone riding, with roadside breath tests common at night and around holidays, so save the beer for after you've parked. Speed limits are signposted and vary between town and open road, so read the signs rather than guessing, and remember headlights are required after dark. Con Dao's roads are quiet compared to the mainland, but the same rules apply island-wide.
