Sand dunes rolling straight down to the sea, a fishing harbour crowded with round basket boats, a canyon stream you can walk through barefoot — Mui Ne packs an unusual amount of landscape into a small stretch of Binh Thuan coast, and almost none of it is built for a rental car. A quad bike rental in Mui Ne gets you onto the White Sand Dunes at sunrise, lets you carve across the Red Sand Dunes on a whim, and drops you right at the mouth of the Fairy Stream for a walk through its red-and-white sandstone canyon. Few places reward going off-road this easily.
This is quad territory rather than scooter territory. The dune belt and the Fairy Stream sit on loose sand and unpaved tracks that a scooter slips on and a car simply can't reach, so an ATV is the one vehicle actually built for the terrain, not just a fun add-on. Distances are short — most of the sights below sit within a 10–20km loop of town — and once you're past the main strip, traffic thins out fast, so a few hours on a quad is enough to string the dunes, the fishing village and the canyon into one easy circuit.
Quads aren't treated as ordinary road vehicles in Vietnam — they're ridden on dunes, tracks and private land through local operators, who generally supervise the ride rather than check for a licence. Most rental shops still set their own minimum age, commonly 18, and will ask for a deposit, either cash or your passport held as security, with the amount varying by shop and bike. If you're planning to combine your trip with any road riding on a motorcycle or scooter, carry a 1968-convention International Driving Permit; a US or Japanese-style 1949 Geneva IDP is not valid here.
Expect around 350,000–450,000 VND per day in low season, rising to roughly 500,000–650,000 VND in high season. Larger two-to-four-seat buggy-style quads run higher, from about 700,000 to 900,000 VND per day.
High season runs roughly November to April, with Tết itself the sharpest spike — bikes get scarce and prices jump, so book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season, May to September, is quieter and cheaper, though the dune tracks stay rideable through most of it since this stretch of coast is drier than the Vietnamese average even in the wetter months.
Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger on any motorised two-wheeler, and checks are routine, though quad-specific helmet rules on private dune tracks are less clearly defined — wear one regardless. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit, enforced through roadside breath tests, especially at night. Speed limits are posted rather than fixed nationally, so read the signs on any stretch you're riding rather than assuming a number.
