Picture a red-clay track winding between dunes the colour of dried paprika, the sea flashing on your right and not a tour bus in sight. That's an ordinary afternoon on a scooter around Mui Ne. One morning you're wading barefoot up the cool little canyon of the Fairy Stream, and by evening you're parked on the ridge of the Red Sand Dunes watching the light turn everything copper. Binh Thuan rewards exactly this kind of freedom — you decide when to stop, and for how long.
The area's landmarks are strung out along 20–40 km of open coastal road, with far less traffic than Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, which makes it easy and genuinely enjoyable to ride yourself rather than sit in a taxi. The distances are too long to walk or cycle comfortably in the heat, and a scooter rental in Mui Ne lets you pull over at a dune, a viewpoint or a roadside seafood shack the moment you feel like it — something no group tour will do for you.
For a standard automatic under 50cc — the usual tourist rental — no driving licence is required in Vietnam. Anything above 50cc calls for a motorcycle licence, and foreigners need either a Vietnamese licence or a valid international driving permit (IDP) in the 1968 Convention format, endorsed for motorcycles; the American, Japanese and some other 1949 Geneva-style IDPs are not accepted. Rental shops set their own minimum age, usually 18, even though under-50cc bikes can technically be ridden younger. Expect to leave a cash deposit, or occasionally your passport as security, with the amount varying by shop and bike.
In low season, a standard automatic scooter rental in Mui Ne runs around 550,000–700,000 VND per day. In high season, expect 800,000–1,200,000 VND per day, with availability tighter. Larger-capacity or newer premium models cost more, from roughly 1,200,000 VND upward.
High season runs roughly November to April, with Tet (Lunar New Year, dates shift each year) as the sharpest spike — bikes get scarce and prices rise. Low season falls between May and September, when the heat and afternoon downpours are heaviest but rentals are easiest to find and cheapest. If you want the calmest riding and steadiest prices, book ahead for the December–April dry stretch; if you're flexible and don't mind a quick afternoon shower, May to September is kinder on the wallet.
Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or moped, and checks are routine. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone riding, enforced with roadside breath tests, particularly at night and around holidays. Headlights are required after dark, speed limits are lower in town than on the open road and are always signposted, so read the signs rather than guess. Scooters are barred from expressways and some bridges and tunnels, and you can't turn right on red unless a sign or green arrow specifically allows it. Ride carefully, and Binh Thuan's dunes and coast road are yours to explore. Have a nice trip!
