If someday you will be in Haiphong, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and public transport. You can always rent a motorcycle in Haiphong on our website and explore this working port city, and the coast beyond it, at your own pace — past the colonial Opera House, out to the old beach resort of Do Son, or onward to the ferry that leads to Cat Ba Island. A motorcycle is the easiest way to see a side of northern Vietnam that most travellers skip on their way to Ha Long Bay.
Haiphong suits a motorcycle because it is a big, spread-out industrial city where the sights, the port, the ferry terminals and the coast road to Do Son are all a fair distance apart. Riding lets you cover this ground quickly and detour down side streets to see the French colonial architecture the city is known for. It is an honest, working city rather than a polished resort, so a motorcycle also gives you the flexibility to head straight for the coast when you want a change of pace. On this page you will find a full guide to motorcycle rental in Haiphong.
Required documents vary between rental companies, but common rules are as follows: you should be at least 18 years old; for engines up to 125cc an A1 licence is usually expected, while larger motorcycles call for a full A-class licence. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence — strictly, a Vietnamese-recognised motorcycle licence is required to ride legally, so check the terms of the specific provider on the booking page. Most companies also ask for a deposit, paid in cash or by card and refunded when you return the motorcycle in good condition.
Motorcycle rental in Haiphong starts from around 650,000 VND per day for a mid-size machine and runs up to roughly 1,100,000–1,350,000 VND per day for a bigger or newer model. What you pay depends on the engine size and, importantly, on the time of year. Prices in Haiphong follow a fairly clear seasonal pattern:
Within any season, weekends and Vietnamese public holidays are the real peak — that is when the best bikes sell out first and prices edge up. Book a few days ahead to lock in the best rate.
Haiphong has a proper cold season unlike southern Vietnam: December to February is cool, often grey and occasionally drizzly, while the warm months from May to August bring the best beach weather and the busiest crowds heading to Do Son and the Cat Ba ferry. September to November is a pleasant, less crowded shoulder season with milder temperatures. If you want warm, reliable beach weather, aim for early summer; if you want the best price and don’t mind cooler days, winter is kinder to your wallet.
In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger, and the police do enforce it. Speed limits in built-up areas are typically 40–50 km/h, rising on the open coast road to Do Son. There is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. Haiphong is a genuine industrial port city, and heavy container trucks are a real feature of the traffic around the docks and main arteries, so stay alert, keep good distance from trucks and buses, use your horn lightly to signal your presence rather than in anger, and take the busiest junctions near the port with extra care.
