Picture mornings by Hon Chong Promontory, salt air and rock ledges catching the first light, before the day-trippers arrive — then an easy ride up to Long Son Pagoda, where the giant white Buddha looks out over rooftops and the whole bay opens up below you. That's the kind of morning a scooter buys you here. You can rent a scooter in Nha Trang on our website and string these moments together on your own schedule, rather than waiting on a tour bus or haggling with a taxi driver every time you want to see something new.
Nha Trang's sights are spread thin: a coastal strip downtown, temples and pagodas up in the hills, and beaches that stretch well beyond the city in both directions. Traffic here moves slowly and is almost entirely scooters, so riding one isn't a novelty — it's simply how the city gets around, and joining that flow feels natural within an hour. A scooter rental in Nha Trang also opens up day trips public transport barely touches: the mountain reserve at Hon Ba, the waterfalls at Ba Ho, the quiet sands at Doc Let, all realistic half-day loops on two wheels.
If the scooter is under 50cc, which covers the standard tourist rental, you don't need a driving licence at all. Anything above 50cc requires a motorcycle licence, and as a foreigner you'll need either a Vietnamese licence or a valid International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 convention and endorsed for motorcycles — a US-style 1949 Geneva IDP won't be accepted. Rental shops generally set their own minimum age, usually 18 even for the smaller machines, and will ask for a cash deposit or hold your passport as security; the exact amount depends on the shop and the bike.
Expect to pay around 150,000–200,000 VND per day in low season, rising to roughly 200,000–300,000 VND per day in high season for a standard scooter. Newer automatic models like the Honda Air Blade or Vision, and anything semi-automatic or manual, typically cost 30–70% more than the basic rate.
December through March is high season — dry, busy, and the time bikes run short and prices climb, so book a few days ahead if you're arriving then, especially around Tet. For better rates and easier availability, aim for the shoulder months of April to June or September to October, when the crowds thin out and prices drop closer to the low-season range.
Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and this is enforced routinely with on-the-spot fines, so don't skip one. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone riding, checked at roadside stops especially at night. Speed limits are signposted rather than fixed nationwide, generally lower in built-up areas and lower for scooters than for cars, so read the signs as you go. Headlights are required after dark, and motorcycles are barred from expressways and a handful of major bridges and tunnels — watch for the exclusion signs.
