Picture this: instead of squeezing onto a crowded tour bus, you pedal along the waterfront with Ha Long Bay's limestone karsts rising out of the water beside you. A bicycle lets you set your own pace between the causeway out to Tuan Chau Island and the promenade at Bai Chay Beach, stopping wherever the view catches you. It's an easy, unhurried way to feel the city rather than just pass through it.
Ha Long's tourist core — the Bai Chay peninsula, the flat causeway to Tuan Chau, and the coastal road toward Hon Gai — is compact and largely flat, which makes it ideal ground to cover on two wheels. Traffic here is far calmer than in Hanoi, so you can ride between your hotel, the market and the cable car base without fighting for space. The bay's karst islands themselves need a boat, but a bicycle is a cheap and flexible way to link everything on shore.
Nothing complicated. There's no licence, registration or minimum age requirement for a bicycle in Vietnam, and helmets aren't legally required for cyclists. Some shops ask for a small deposit, either in cash or by holding your passport, though amounts vary by shop and rental length. No international driving permit is needed — that only applies if you're planning to ride a scooter or motorcycle instead.
Expect to pay around 70,000–90,000 VND per day in low season, rising to roughly 120,000–150,000 VND per day in high season. Electric or higher-spec bikes typically run 200,000–300,000 VND per day.
If you want to dodge both crowds and higher prices, aim for the September to November shoulder season. High season runs June to August for domestic travellers, plus a sharp Tet spike in late January or early February when bikes get scarce and some shops close. Outside of Tet, walk-up availability is usually fine, but booking a day or two ahead during summer months is a safe bet if you want to rent a bicycle in Ha Long without hassle.
Vietnam drives on the right, so keep that in mind if you're used to the opposite side. Helmets aren't legally required for pedal cyclists, though they're a sensible idea near the busier stretches of Bai Chay. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone operating a vehicle on Vietnamese roads, and speed limits are signposted and vary by road type, so it's worth reading the signs rather than assuming a set number. On a bicycle you'll mostly be sharing calm waterfront roads, which makes Ha Long one of the more relaxed places in Vietnam to ride.
