Nerja has a habit of hiding its best parts just out of reach of the road. The Balcón de Europa gives you the postcard view from town, but the coves, gorges and whitewashed villages behind it stay out of sight unless you go looking — and a rented quad is exactly the tool for that. Ride out along the coastal track toward Playa de Maro, thread up the switchbacks to Frigiliana, or just point yourself inland and see where the track goes. This is the kind of exploring that a taxi or a tour bus simply can't do.
The Sierra de Almijara rises almost straight out of the sea here, so anything interesting — river gorges, mountain villages, tracks to abandoned hamlets — sits inland on narrow, winding roads that are often unpaved. That terrain rewards a quad far more than a scooter or a hire car: nothing is more than 10–25 minutes away, but the surface underneath changes constantly. If you want to rent a quad bike in Nerja, this is precisely the landscape it was built for.
Road-legal quads require a driving licence, and rental desks in Nerja will normally ask to see a standard car licence rather than a specific motorcycle category. Most companies set their own minimum age, usually 18 or 21, regardless of when you first qualified for your licence. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it — many rental desks ask for one. You'll also need a deposit, usually blocked on a credit card in your name, with the amount depending on the model and operator.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're typically looking at EUR 15–25 per day, while high season runs EUR 40–70 per day; premium models can reach EUR 70–100 or more per day.
High season on the Spanish mainland runs through July and August, plus Easter week — book ahead if you're travelling then, since the best models go quickly. Low season stretches from November to March, with far more availability and lower prices. If you'd rather skip the crowds without losing good weather, May–June and September–October hit a comfortable middle ground.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, and dipped headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, and 90 km/h on the conventional roads you'll use heading toward Frigiliana or Cómpeta. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lowered to 0.3 g/l for anyone with less than two years' driving experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
