Tres Cantos sits right where the city stops and the Sierra de Guadarrama begins, and a bicycle is the natural way to feel that edge. Pedal out past the last apartment blocks and within half an hour you can be looking at the still water of the Embalse de Santillana, with the turrets of the old castle reflected on the surface, or climbing toward the granite towers of La Pedriza. It is the kind of ride where the town gives way to open sky almost without warning.
What makes this pairing work so well is the contrast built into the place itself. Tres Cantos is compact, flat and easy to cross on two wheels for everyday errands, yet it borders one of Madrid's wildest protected landscapes. A car feels like overkill for a short hop across town, and on foot the reservoir and the sierra are simply out of reach — a bike closes that gap, letting you combine a quick ride to the shops with a long loop toward Manzanares el Real whenever the mood strikes. If you want to rent a bike in Tres Cantos, this is exactly the kind of flexibility you are buying.
No licence is required to ride a bicycle in Spain, whatever your age, so this is one of the simplest rentals around. Rental shops usually ask riders to be at least 16, though children's bikes are available for younger visitors travelling with family. A deposit is normally requested, blocked on a credit card in the renter's name, with the amount depending on the model — a city bike costs less to secure than an e-bike. No International Driving Permit or ID beyond a passport is needed.
Average prices run from EUR 3–6 per day in low season up to EUR 8–15 per day in high season, and a premium model such as an e-bike or higher-spec bike costs around EUR 15–25 per day.
If you are chasing the lowest prices, aim for November through February, when demand is quiet across the Madrid region. July and August, plus Easter week, are the busiest and priciest stretches, so book ahead if your trip falls then. For the best balance of comfortable riding weather and reasonable rates, late spring and early autumn are hard to beat.
Spain drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. A helmet is compulsory for cyclists under 16 within built-up areas, and for everyone on interurban roads such as the routes out toward Manzanares el Real or Colmenar Viejo — worth wearing regardless of age once you leave town. Speed limits for motor traffic range from 30–50 km/h in built-up areas up to 90 km/h on conventional roads, so cars will generally be moving fast around you; vehicles overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance. Riding after drinking is not worth the risk either: Spain's blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l. At night outside built-up areas, lights and a reflective garment are required.
