Tarragona rewards anyone willing to cover a bit of ground. The old town rises on a hill above the sea, crowned by the amphitheatre where gladiators once fought with the Mediterranean as a backdrop, while below stretches a flat, sun-soaked seafront running past Platja del Miracle and on toward Platja Llarga. On two wheels you can string these together in an afternoon — something that's a slog on foot and overkill for a taxi.
That layout is exactly why a bike suits this city so well. The historic centre and the beaches sit only a few kilometres apart, close enough to feel lazy in a car but far enough to wear you out walking, especially once the summer heat sets in. The Costa Daurada coastal promenade keeps you off busy roads for most of the ride, and the Via Verda greenway along the Riu Francolí offers an easier, traffic-free alternative inland. If you want to rent a bike in Tarragona, you'll find the city was practically built for it.
Good news: no licence is required to rent a bicycle, at any age. Most rental companies simply ask for ID and a card for the deposit, which is usually blocked rather than charged and released once the bike comes back undamaged. There's no minimum age set by law, though some operators prefer riders to be accompanied if very young. No International Driving Permit is needed either — this is one of the simplest vehicles to arrange on our website.
Prices move a fair bit across the year:
July and August are Tarragona's busiest and priciest months, so it pays to book ahead if you're travelling then. November through March is low season, with the cheapest rates of the year, while May, June, September and October hit a comfortable middle ground — mild weather, thinner crowds, and reasonable prices. If you're after the best value, aim outside the summer peak.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists must wear a helmet on interurban roads regardless of age, though within the city it's only compulsory for riders under 16 — wearing one anyway is a sensible habit. Speed limits drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas and as low as 20–30 km/h on narrow single-lane urban streets, so traffic moves slowly around the old town. Riding under the influence carries the same 0.5 g/l blood alcohol limit as driving, and at night outside built-up areas cyclists need lights plus a reflective garment. Drivers overtaking you must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance, which makes the coastal roads feel safer than they might look at first glance.
