Picture leaving the port of Ermoupoli behind on two wheels, the neoclassical façades of Miaouli Square giving way to quiet lanes as you pedal toward the coast. Syros rewards exactly this kind of unhurried exploring: one afternoon you're weaving past the shipowners' mansions of Vaporia, the next you're freewheeling into a fishing village for lunch by the water. Renting a bike here means setting your own pace, with no bus timetable standing between you and a sunset in Kini.
What makes this island so well suited to cycling is its size. Syros runs barely 8km end to end, so a single day on a bike can take you from the capital to the southern beach villages and back. Ermoupoli's center is calm outside the busiest summer hours, and the coastal road linking Galissas, Finikas and Vari is flat, well used by cyclists, and easy to follow — with the climb up to Ano Syros there for anyone who wants a workout and a view to match.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle in Greece, and there's no minimum age set by law — though some shops prefer riders to be at least 12–14 on their own bike. You won't need an International Driving Permit either, since that only applies to motorised vehicles. Most rental shops on Syros will ask for a small deposit, usually held on a credit card, which is refunded when the bike comes back in good shape.
Expect to pay between 3 and 7 EUR per day for a basic city bike in low season, rising to 8–15 EUR per day in high season. E-bikes and higher-end mountain bikes typically run 15–25 EUR per day.
High season runs July to August, when Ermoupoli fills up and bikes can sell out on short notice — book a few days ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, though this is also when many operators shut down for the winter. Your best bet for combining good weather, open shops and fair prices is April to June or September to October, when a same-day or next-day booking is usually enough.
Greece drives on the right, and while bicycles don't require a licence, it's worth riding with the same care you'd use anywhere with narrow, occasionally steep island roads. Helmets aren't legally mandatory for cyclists, but wearing one is a sensible habit given the loose gravel and blind bends you'll find outside the main towns. Keep to the tarmac — insurance on rented bikes, and certainly on any motorised vehicle you might add to your trip, typically excludes off-road riding. If you're combining your visit with a scooter or car, remember the standard limits: 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, with a blood-alcohol limit of 0.5 g/l for most drivers.
