Picture the Llobregat unspooling beside you, flat and glinting, as you pedal past the edge of Sant Vicenç dels Horts with nothing but a light headwind to slow you down. This is a town built for two wheels: the river path runs right through it, and within twenty minutes you can be standing in front of Gaudí's Colònia Güell or wandering the old bridge at Molins de Rei. Locals use this same route to commute; you can use it to disappear into the Baix Llobregat countryside for an afternoon.
What makes a bicycle the right call here is the geography itself. Sant Vicenç dels Horts sits directly on a flat, traffic-separated greenway, so you never have to fight cars or hunt for parking to reach the next town over. Most of the valley riding stays gently flat, and if you're after more of a challenge, Collserola and even Montserrat rise within reach for the day you want real climbs.
No licence is required to hire a bicycle in Spain, at any age. Rental shops generally ask for a minimum age of their own, often around 16 or 18 depending on the operator, and may hold a small deposit on a credit card in your name. Since no driving licence is involved, an International Driving Permit isn't needed for a bike rental.
A basic city or hybrid bike runs 3–8 EUR per day in low season and 10–18 EUR per day in high season. E-bikes and road bikes cost more, typically 20–35 EUR per day, with premium models reaching 25–40 EUR per day.
High season on the Spanish mainland runs through July and August, plus Easter week, when demand and prices both peak — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lightest crowds and lowest prices in November through February. For the best mix of weather and value, May–June and September–October are hard to beat.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists must wear a helmet on interurban roads regardless of age, though within town it's only compulsory for riders under 16. Speed limits for other traffic sharing the road range from 50 km/h in built-up areas down to 30 km/h or 20 km/h on narrower urban streets, so expect calm conditions on shared roads. Vehicles overtaking you must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance, and if you're riding a scooter or moped instead, the blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.3 g/l for newer riders.
