Sant Joan d'Alacant may sit a few kilometres inland, but it puts you within easy pedalling distance of one of the Costa Blanca's best stretches of coast. Roll out toward Platja de Sant Joan and its long seafront promenade, then keep going along the coastal path until the lighthouse at Cap de les Hortes comes into view over the rocks. From there the sea is never far from the handlebars — and that's really the appeal of choosing two wheels here.
The town's flat, well-linked lanes and the dedicated bike path running along the beaches toward El Campello and Alicante make this an easy place to ride, even if you're not a regular cyclist. Distances are short, gradients are gentle, and the route strings together beaches, a Bronze Age ruin and two old towns without ever forcing you onto a busy road. If you want to rent a bike in Sant Joan d'Alacant, the whole coast opens up in a way the bus timetable simply can't match.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle here, whatever your age. Most rental companies ask riders to be at least 16 or 18 and will usually hold a small deposit on a credit card in your name; the exact amount depends on the operator and the model. Since no licence is involved, you won't need an International Driving Permit either — just a card for the deposit and, ideally, a booking made in advance during busy weeks.
Expect to pay around 3–8 EUR a day for a standard city or hybrid bike in low season, rising to 12–25 EUR during high season. If you'd rather ride an electric or road bike, budget 20–40 EUR a day.
High season runs through July and August, plus Easter week, when demand and prices both rise along the coast — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when bikes are both cheaper and easier to find on short notice. For the best mix of mild weather and manageable prices, May, June, September and October are hard to beat, and a bit of planning still pays off.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet within town, though it's compulsory on interurban roads and for anyone under 16 — we'd recommend wearing one regardless. Speed limits drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas and as low as 20–30 km/h on shared single-lane streets, so traffic moves slowly around cyclists. Drivers overtaking a bike must leave at least 1.5 metres of clearance, and you're allowed to ride two abreast. The blood alcohol limit for drivers sharing the road with you is 0.5 g/l, so traffic tends to stay orderly.
