Paxos rewards anyone willing to leave the harbour on two wheels. Rent a bicycle in Paxos and the whole island opens up: pastel houses along the Gaios waterfront, olive groves closing in on the road to Loggos, the horseshoe bay at Lakka waiting at the far end. Cars queue and squeeze past each other on lanes barely wide enough for one; on a bike you just keep moving, stopping wherever the view demands it.
At around 12km end to end, Paxos was practically made for cycling. One winding main road links every village, and the lanes inside Gaios and Loggos are too narrow for most cars to navigate comfortably. A bicycle rental in Paxos means you can ride from Gaios to Loggos to Lakka in well under half an hour, ducking into coves and viewpoints a rental car would sail straight past — and parking is never a problem when your ride fits against any wall.
No licence is required to hire a bicycle, so this is the easiest way to get moving on the island — no age restriction, no International Driving Permit, and generally just a light deposit or ID left with the shop. If you'd rather switch to a scooter for the hillier stretches, note that Greek law requires at least category AM for 50cc mopeds, with larger scooters needing the matching motorcycle licence category; non-EU visitors should carry an IDP either way.
Expect to pay roughly EUR 3-8 per day for a basic bicycle in low season, rising to around EUR 15-25 per day in July and August when demand across the island peaks. E-bikes and larger scooters run higher, from EUR 25-40+ per day at the busiest times.
High season runs July to August, when prices peak and stock can run short — book a few days ahead if you're arriving then. Low season stretches from November to March, with many shops closed altogether, so May-June and September-October are the sweet spot: mild weather, thinner crowds and low-season prices still largely in effect.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for scooter, moped and motorcycle riders and passengers, and enforcement is strict. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in villages and 90 km/h on the open road, though Paxos's narrow, winding lanes rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, tightening to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and new drivers — best to skip the ouzo before you ride.
